Mold Alexandra 1-2 Newtown A.F.C. — Newtown A.F.C. came from behind to win 2-1 away at Mold Alexandra in the Welsh Cymru Championship, with a second-half goal sealing a hard-earned three points at Alyn Park.

Match overview

Mold Alexandra started brightly and took the lead with a well-worked move down the right, finishing at the near post. The home crowd responded, and for a spell Mold looked the more likely side to add a second. Newtown, however, stayed composed. They gradually wrestled control of midfield and equalised before half-time with a clinical strike from the edge of the area.

The second half was more open. Both teams pushed for a winner, but Newtown’s extra quality in the final third told. A set-piece delivery was only partially cleared, and Newtown’s midfielder reacted quickest to fire home. Mold pressed late but could not find an equaliser, leaving Newtown to celebrate an important away victory.

Key moments

• Mold opener: A fast break and low cross was converted at the near post.
• Newtown equaliser: A composed finish from just outside the box levelled the score before half-time.
• Winning goal: Newtown capitalised on a half-cleared corner, scoring from the edge of the box.
• Late pressure: Mold forced two corners in stoppage time, but Newtown defended bravely.

Tactical story

Mold Alexandra’s early plan was to attack quickly down the flanks and get crosses into the box. It worked for the opening goal, but Newtown adjusted by narrowing their midfield and forcing Mold’s wide players inside. Newtown’s central trio then controlled possession, switching the play and creating space for their full-backs to overlap.

The visitors’ set-piece work proved decisive. Newtown had already threatened from corners before the winner, and their willingness to commit bodies forward in the second phase of set plays ultimately made the difference. Mold’s response was spirited but lacked precision in the final third.

Standout players

Newtown’s midfielder Alex Jones was influential, driving forward and taking his equaliser well. Connor Roberts made a strong impact from midfield and scored the winner. Defender Sam Hughes dealt with Mold’s late aerial barrage. For Mold Alexandra, Daniel Price took his goal confidently, while goalkeeper Rhys Evans made several saves to keep the score down.

Welsh Cymru Championship impact

The away win strengthens Newtown A.F.C.’s push in the Welsh Cymru Championship and gives them momentum in a tightly contested division. Away victories of this kind are often crucial in the race for promotion and playoff places. Mold Alexandra will be disappointed to lose after taking the lead, but their performance showed enough to suggest they can compete with the stronger sides in the league. The result adds another notable line to the head-to-head record between the clubs.
