Sport in Caerphilly edged Chepstow Town 1-0 in a tight Welsh Cup contest on October 17, 2026, with a single second-half goal proving enough to settle a tense, hard-fought tie.

Chances were limited throughout, and both sides showed plenty of respect for the occasion. Sport in Caerphilly enjoyed slightly more possession, while Chepstow Town defended resolutely and looked to strike on the counter. The decisive moment arrived in the 57th minute, and the home side then protected their lead with discipline and no little nerve.

Match overview

The first half was a cagey affair. Sport in Caerphilly moved the ball patiently but struggled to break down a compact Chepstow defence. Chepstow, meanwhile, threatened occasionally from wide areas and set pieces, but neither goalkeeper was seriously tested before the interval.

The game opened up after the break. Sport in Caerphilly pushed their full-backs higher and found more space in the final third. Their persistence paid off in the 57th minute when a low cross from the right was turned in at the near post. Chepstow responded with their best spell of the match, but a combination of brave defending and a crucial late save kept the home side ahead.

Key moments

• 57 minutes: Sport in Caerphilly score the only goal of the game after pressure down the right flank.
• 73 minutes: Chepstow Town force a fine save from the home goalkeeper.
• 88 minutes: A late Chepstow corner is cleared as Sport in Caerphilly hold on.

Tactical story

Sport in Caerphilly’s victory was built on patience and game management. They did not panic during a frustrating first half and instead kept working the ball into wide areas. Once they scored, their midfield dropped slightly deeper to protect the lead, while the forwards continued to press whenever Chepstow tried to play out from the back.

Chepstow’s defensive organisation was impressive for long stretches. They limited clear chances and defended their box well, but they lacked the final pass in the attacking third. Their late pressure made for an anxious finish, yet Sport in Caerphilly’s back line held firm.

Standout performers

The Sport in Caerphilly goalkeeper was the obvious hero late on, producing a key save when Chepstow pushed for an equaliser. The midfield also deserves credit for controlling the tempo. Chepstow’s centre-backs were strong throughout, while their captain drove the late rally.

What it means

It is a narrow but valuable win for Sport in Caerphilly, who showed they can win a tight cup tie without being at their most fluent. Chepstow Town exit with credit after a disciplined away performance, but the margin of defeat will sting given how close they came to forcing a response.
