Dolgellau Athletic edge Penycae in Welsh Cup away tie

Dolgellau Athletic secured a 2-1 away victory over Penycae in the Welsh Cup on Saturday, October 17, 2026, booking their place in the next round with a disciplined and clinical cup performance. On a night when the home side pushed hard for a comeback, Dolgellau’s ability to defend their box and strike at the right moments proved decisive.

The Welsh Cup tie had the intensity expected of a knockout fixture, with Penycae looking to use home advantage and Dolgellau content to absorb pressure before breaking forward. The visitors took the lead in the 12th minute when Rhys Morgan latched onto a loose ball just outside the penalty area and drove a low finish into the bottom corner. Penycae responded well, forcing several corners and testing the Dolgellau goalkeeper before the interval, but the away side preserved their narrow advantage at half-time.

Key moments in the cup tie

Penycae’s persistence paid off in the 58th minute when Cai Williams arrived at the back post to convert a deep cross, bringing the home crowd to life. For a spell, Penycae looked the more likely side to score again, but Dolgellau weathered the pressure and regained control in midfield. The decisive moment arrived in the 84th minute, when Iwan Roberts capitalized on a quick counterattack and slotted past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.

• 12' — Rhys Morgan opens the scoring for Dolgellau Athletic.
• 58' — Cai Williams equalizes for Penycae.
• 84' — Iwan Roberts scores the winner for Dolgellau.

Tactical story: patience versus pressure

Penycae’s approach was built on quick transitions and getting numbers into the box, and it produced a strong second-half spell after the equalizer. Dolgellau, however, defended with composure and were dangerous whenever they won the ball in wide areas. Their midfield trio worked hard to screen the back four, while the front players showed good movement in behind. The visitors’ game management in the final ten minutes was especially impressive, as they slowed the tempo and forced Penycae to chase the game.

Standout performers

Iwan Roberts will take the headlines for the winning goal, but Dolgellau’s goalkeeper delivered a composed display, claiming crosses and making an important save shortly after Penycae’s equalizer. For Penycae, Cai Williams was the standout attacking threat, and his goal rewarded a spirited individual performance. The home side’s captain also drove the team forward well in the second half, though the final pass too often went astray.

What the result means

For Dolgellau Athletic, the win extends their Welsh Cup run and gives the squad confidence ahead of the next round. For Penycae, the defeat is a difficult one to take, but the performance showed enough attacking quality to suggest they can respond positively in league football. Cup ties are often decided by small margins, and on this occasion, Dolgellau’s ruthlessness in front of goal made the difference.
