Connah's Quay Nomads produced one of the most convincing performances of the Welsh Cup weekend, sweeping aside Porthmadog 4-0 on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The Nomads were sharper from the first whistle, controlled the tempo of the tie, and turned long spells of pressure into goals at regular intervals.

A dominant Welsh Cup result from start to finish

From the opening exchanges, Connah’s Quay Nomads looked like a side determined to avoid any cup drama. They pressed Porthmadog high up the pitch, forced turnovers in dangerous areas, and kept the visiting defence pinned back for long stretches. The early breakthrough settled any nerves and allowed the Nomads to play with freedom.

Porthmadog, to their credit, tried to stay compact and threaten on the counter, but they struggled to keep possession long enough to relieve the pressure. Every time they cleared the ball, Connah’s Quay recycled it quickly and came again. By half-time, the tie already had a clear favourite, and the second half only confirmed that superiority.

Key moments that decided the tie

• 12th minute: Connah’s Quay opened the scoring after a flowing move down the right, finished calmly inside the penalty area.
• 38th minute: A second goal arrived before the break, rewarding the Nomads for their relentless pressing and quick ball circulation.
• 63rd minute: The third goal effectively ended any hope of a Porthmadog comeback, with a composed finish after a cut-back from the byline.
• 84th minute: The fourth capped a ruthless team performance, as Connah’s Quay punished tired legs with another crisp attacking sequence.

Tactical story: width, pressing, and set-piece threat

Connah’s Quay Nomads used width intelligently throughout the match. Their full-backs pushed high, the wingers stayed wide, and the midfielders repeatedly arrived late in the box to support the central striker. That movement made it difficult for Porthmadog to mark runners, especially when the ball was switched quickly from side to side.

The Nomads also dominated the aerial battle. Their set-piece delivery caused problems all afternoon, and even when they did not score directly from corners or free-kicks, they won second balls and sustained attacks. Defensively, they were rarely troubled. The back line held a high line, squeezed the space in midfield, and limited Porthmadog to hopeful efforts from distance.

Standout performers and what the win means

The Connah’s Quay No. 9 led the line superbly, bringing others into play and finishing with confidence. The wide players were a constant outlet, while the midfield duo controlled the rhythm of the game. The clean sheet was just as satisfying as the four goals, underlining the team’s focus for the full 90 minutes.

For Porthmadog, this was a difficult afternoon, but cup exits can sometimes sharpen a squad’s focus on league priorities. For Connah’s Quay Nomads, the 4-0 Welsh Cup result is a statement of intent. It sends them into the next round with momentum, confidence, and a reminder that they can be a dangerous opponent in knockout football.
