Ninh Binh FC won a remarkable seven-goal thriller in the Vietnam National Champion League, defeating Hoang Anh Gia Lai 4-3 on 18 October 2026 after a breathless second half that swung repeatedly between the two sides.

Ninh Binh appeared to be taking control when they raced into an early two-goal lead, but Hoang Anh Gia Lai responded with character and quality. The match turned into an open, end-to-end contest, and a late winner finally settled a fixture that had everything: quick goals, defensive mistakes and moments of individual brilliance.

Match overview

The hosts started aggressively and were rewarded inside the opening quarter of an hour. Their first goal came from a high turnover, with a low cross converted at the near post. The second arrived soon after, as Ninh Binh’s forward found space between the centre-backs and finished calmly.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai refused to fold. They pulled one back before half-time with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box, and then equalised early in the second half after a quick move down the left. Ninh Binh restored their lead, only for HAGL to level again, setting up a dramatic finale.

Tactical story

Ninh Binh’s early success came from their pressing. They closed down HAGL’s first pass out of defence and forced mistakes in dangerous areas. Going forward, they attacked quickly through the channels and looked dangerous whenever their wide players isolated the full-backs.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai’s response was impressive. They adjusted their build-up, used their midfielders to break the first line of pressure and found space in behind Ninh Binh’s advanced defence. Both teams struggled defensively, however, and the game became a series of transitional attacks. In the end, Ninh Binh’s ability to produce one more moment of quality in the final minutes made the difference.

Standout players

Ninh Binh’s centre-forward was central to the win, scoring twice and occupying both centre-backs throughout. Their attacking midfielder also impressed, linking play and delivering the cross that led to the decisive late goal. The captain’s leadership in midfield helped the hosts regain composure after HAGL’s equalisers.

For Hoang Anh Gia Lai, the left winger was a constant threat and played a role in two of their goals. Their playmaker showed excellent vision in tight spaces, while the centre-forward’s movement caused problems for Ninh Binh’s back line. HAGL will be frustrated by the defensive lapses that ultimately cost them a point.

Season impact

The 4-3 victory gives Ninh Binh FC a major confidence boost and three valuable points in the Vietnam National Champion League. For Hoang Anh Gia Lai, the defeat is a painful one, but their attacking display offers encouragement. Both teams showed why they can be dangerous going forward; the difference was Ninh Binh’s ability to find a winner in a match that seemed destined to end level.
