Tactical story

Monagas SC’s early dominance came from their aggressive pressing and quick vertical passing. Academia Puerto Cabello struggled to cope with the visitors’ movement in the opening half-hour, conceding space between the lines and allowing Monagas SC to attack in numbers. However, the home side’s goal before half-time shifted the psychological balance of the match.

In the second half, Academia Puerto Cabello pushed their midfield higher and used set pieces to great effect. The penalty and the headed goal from a corner came from sustained pressure, while Monagas SC dropped deeper as they tried to protect their lead. The visitors’ late equaliser was a reward for their persistence, even though they had been second-best for much of the second period.

Standout players

Diego García was the catalyst for Academia Puerto Cabello’s comeback, scoring twice and constantly troubling the Monagas SC defence. José Rivas also made a major impact with the go-ahead goal and strong defensive work at set pieces. For Monagas SC, Fernando Basante was excellent in the first half, while Andrés Romero showed composure to score the dramatic late equaliser.

Season impact

The draw feels like both a point gained and two dropped for each side. Academia Puerto Cabello will be pleased with their fighting spirit after trailing 2-0, but they will rue not holding on for the win. Monagas SC, meanwhile, will take confidence from their attacking display and their ability to respond late. In a tight Primera Division race, such emotional swings can have a lasting effect on momentum.
