Portuguesa FC 0-2 Zamora Barinas: Zamora Barinas secured a professional 2-0 away win over Portuguesa FC in the Venezuela Cup on 22 October 2026, combining disciplined defending with two well-timed goals. Portuguesa FC enjoyed long spells of possession but lacked the final pass, while Zamora Barinas defended their box with composure and punished the hosts on the break.

Match overview

The match was played at a measured tempo early on, with Portuguesa FC looking to build through midfield and Zamora Barinas content to sit in a compact block. The visitors took the lead in the 31st minute when Jesus Arrieta found space at the far post and converted a deep cross. Portuguesa FC responded with more urgency before half-time but could not find a clear route through Zamora's back line.

Zamora Barinas doubled their advantage in the 76th minute through Carlos Ramos, who finished a quick counter-attack after Portuguesa FC committed numbers forward. The second goal effectively settled the contest, forcing the hosts into increasingly desperate crosses that were comfortably dealt with by Zamora's centre-backs.

Tactical story

Portuguesa FC's possession-based approach gave them control of the ball but not the game. Their midfield circulated possession neatly, yet Zamora Barinas' defensive line stayed compact and forced the hosts into wide areas where crosses were easy to defend. Zamora's 4-4-2 shape also allowed them to counter in pairs, and both goals came from moments when Portuguesa FC were stretched after losing the ball in midfield.

Standout performers

Carlos Ramos was influential for Zamora Barinas, scoring the decisive second goal and holding the ball up well under pressure. Jesus Arrieta's first-half opener changed the game's rhythm and forced Portuguesa FC to take more risks. At the back, Zamora's centre-back pairing dealt with a steady stream of crosses, while goalkeeper Jhonny Perez produced the key save of the match. For Portuguesa FC, the midfield trio worked hard but lacked penetration in the final third.

What it means

The victory gives Zamora Barinas a valuable cushion in the Venezuela Cup and rewards their disciplined away plan. Portuguesa FC remain capable of overturning the deficit in the return fixture, but they will need more variety in attack and greater care when their full-backs push forward. The result also highlighted the importance of converting possession into clear chances in knockout cup football.
