Bay FC and Portland Thorns FC Women played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the United States Women’s National Soccer League on October 19, 2026, at PayPal Park in San Jose. In a match that swung both ways, Portland twice held the lead, but Bay FC showed character to fight back and claim a point that keeps them in the NWSL play-off picture.

Match Overview

Portland started strongly, pressing high and forcing Bay FC into early turnovers. The visitors took the lead inside the first 20 minutes with a neat move through midfield. Bay FC responded well, equalising before half-time through a well-timed run into the box. The home side then took the lead early in the second half, only for Portland to find a late equaliser that silenced the home crowd.

Key Moments

• 16th minute: Portland opened the scoring when Sophia Smith finished off a quick counter with a low shot across goal.
• 38th minute: Bay FC equalised through Racheal Kundananji, who latched onto a through ball and rounded the goalkeeper.
• 63rd minute: The hosts went ahead when a corner was flicked on at the near post and bundled in at the far post.
• 87th minute: Portland rescued a point with a header from a deep cross, leaving Bay FC frustrated.

Tactical Story

Portland controlled possession for long periods and looked dangerous whenever they switched play quickly. Bay FC, by contrast, were at their best in transition, using the pace of their forwards to stretch the visitors’ back line. The home side’s pressing improved after the break, and their second goal came from a set piece that had clearly been worked on. However, Portland’s persistence paid off late on, and both managers will feel their teams showed enough to win.

Standout Players

Racheal Kundananji was a constant threat for Bay FC, with her pace and direct running causing problems throughout. Sophia Smith’s movement and finishing were central to Portland’s attacking play, while both goalkeepers made important saves in a game that could have produced more goals.

Season Impact

The draw keeps Bay FC in the battle for an NWSL playoff spot, though they will be disappointed not to hold on for all three points. Portland remain in the upper reaches of the standings and will take confidence from their late response. With the season entering its final stretch, both teams know that fine margins will decide their fate.
