Full time: Minnesota United FC 3-1 Sporting Kansas City

Minnesota United FC produced a convincing 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City at Allianz Field on October 29, 2026, using a strong second-half performance to claim all three points and reinforce their position in the Western Conference playoff picture.

Match overview

The Loons were on the front foot from the opening whistle, pressing Sporting Kansas City’s back line and forcing turnovers in dangerous areas. Minnesota took the lead in the 17th minute when Robin Lod slipped a pass through the defense for Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who took a touch before finishing low past the goalkeeper.

Sporting Kansas City responded well and found an equalizer in the 38th minute through Daniel Salloi, whose curling effort from the left side of the box bent beyond the reach of Dayne St. Clair. The goal gave SKC a foothold, but Minnesota restored control after halftime and reclaimed the lead in the 56th minute when Lod finished a low cross from Joseph Rosales at the near post.

Key moments

• 17’ — Minnesota take the lead: Hlongwane runs onto Lod’s through ball and finishes calmly.
• 38’ — Sporting KC equalize: Salloi curls a precise shot into the far corner.
• 56’ — Minnesota regain the advantage: Lod converts Rosales’s cross from close range.
• 71’ — St. Clair preserves the lead: The Minnesota goalkeeper makes a strong save from a SKC header.
• 82’ — Minnesota seal the win: Teemu Pukki finishes a flowing counterattack to make it 3-1.

Tactical story

Minnesota’s approach was built on width and quick transitions. Hlongwane’s pace stretched Sporting KC on the right, while Lod’s movement between the lines created uncertainty for the visitors’ midfield. The Loons also pressed aggressively after losing possession, winning the ball high enough to launch repeated attacks before SKC could settle into its defensive shape.

Sporting Kansas City’s best spell came after its equalizer, when Salloi and the midfield found space in behind Minnesota’s advanced full-backs. But the visitors struggled to sustain pressure after halftime. Minnesota adjusted by dropping a midfielder closer to the back line, limiting SKC’s counterattacking lanes, and then used the pace of Hlongwane and Pukki to exploit the space that opened up as Sporting chased the game.

Standout performers

Robin Lod was the engine of Minnesota’s attack, contributing a goal and an assist and constantly finding ways to link play in the final third. Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s pace gave Sporting Kansas City problems throughout, while Teemu Pukki’s late goal capped a professional team performance. Dayne St. Clair made key saves at important moments, including a second-half stop that preserved Minnesota’s lead. For Sporting KC, Daniel Salloi was the brightest attacking threat, but the visitors lacked the same control in midfield over the final half-hour.

What the result means

The win keeps Minnesota United FC in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race and highlights their ability to turn home matches into three points. Sporting Kansas City, meanwhile, leave Allianz Field with work to do. The result leaves SKC needing a stronger response in their next fixtures if they are to close the gap in the standings and remain in the postseason conversation.
