Breidablik Women continued their pursuit of the Iceland Besta-deild kvenna title with a 2-1 away victory over IBV Vestmannaeyjar Women on 26 September 2026. On a night when the home side produced a spirited performance in front of their own supporters, Breidablik's greater cutting edge in the final third proved decisive, and the three points keep them firmly in the hunt at the top of the table.

Match Overview

IBV Vestmannaeyjar, the women's team of the historic club from the Westman Islands, have long been a respected presence in Icelandic women's football, and they approached this fixture with the intensity such a meeting demands. Playing at home, IBV pressed high in the opening exchanges and looked to disrupt Breidablik's passing rhythm, forcing the visitors into several hurried clearances.

Breidablik, one of the dominant forces in Icelandic women's football and a regular competitor in European competition, absorbed that early pressure and gradually imposed themselves on the game. Their technical quality in midfield began to tell, and the match settled into a pattern of Breidablik possession against IBV resilience and counter-attacking ambition.

Key Moments

• First half, 22nd minute: Breidablik take the lead, finishing off a patient move with a precise strike from the edge of the box after a clever lay-off.
• First half, 39th minute: IBV respond. A well-delivered cross from the left is met with a strong header, and the home side are level going into the break.
• Second half, 67th minute: Breidablik restore their advantage, capitalising on a loose ball in the penalty area and converting from close range.
• Second half, 84th minute: IBV push for an equaliser and force a fine save from the Breidablik goalkeeper with a dipping effort from distance.
• Full time: Breidablik see out the closing minutes with calm possession, denying IBV any late set-piece opportunities.

Tactical Story

The game was decided in the spaces between IBV's midfield and defence. Breidablik's attacking players drifted intelligently into those pockets, and their ability to receive on the half-turn repeatedly pulled the home side's defensive shape apart. Both Breidablik goals stemmed from this pattern, with quick combinations unlocking a defence that had otherwise defended its box well.

IBV's response was impressive. Their equaliser came from the flanks, where they consistently found joy against Breidablik's full-backs, and their willingness to commit numbers forward in the second half made for an absorbing contest. In the end, though, the difference was ruthlessness: Breidablik converted their clearest chances, while IBV were left to rue the moments when a final pass went astray.

Standout Performers

Breidablik's attacking players were the architects of the win, with the two goalscorers linking well throughout and the playmaker in midfield dictating the tempo of the game. The goalkeeper's late save was crucial in preserving the narrow lead. For IBV, the goalscorer and the wide players were the standout performers, while the team's defensive midfielder worked tirelessly to break up play against technically superior opponents.

What It Means

With the Besta-deild kvenna season reaching its decisive phase, every away win carries extra weight. Breidablik maintain the pressure on their rivals at the top of the table, and their ability to grind out results in difficult venues is exactly what title-winning campaigns are made of. For IBV Vestmannaeyjar, the performance offered plenty of encouragement even in defeat, and they will look to convert that level of display into points in their remaining home fixtures.
