CA River Plate Reserves 1-3 Montevideo City Torque Reserves — Montevideo City Torque Reserves delivered a commanding second-half performance to claim a 3-1 victory over CA River Plate Reserves in the Uruguay Reserve League on 28 September 2026.

Match Overview

The reserve-team clash in Montevideo was a tale of two halves. River Plate Reserves started brightly and took the game to their opponents, but Torque’s superior fitness and tactical discipline told after the break. Torque’s pressing game forced repeated turnovers, and their clinical finishing in the final third made the difference. The win strengthens Torque’s position in the reserve standings and continues their reputation as one of the most effective youth development setups in Uruguayan football.

First Half

Torque drew first blood on 18 minutes when Nicolás Siri pounced on a defensive error, raced clear, and finished low past the goalkeeper. River Plate responded with purpose and equalised on 39 minutes through Franco Nicola, who headed home from a well-delivered corner. The scoreline was level at the break, but River Plate had already begun to tire, and Torque’s midfielders were finding increasing space between the lines.

Second Half

Torque regained the lead on 58 minutes. Emiliano Gómez received the ball on the edge of the box, shifted it onto his left foot, and curled a shot into the bottom corner. River Plate tried to push forward in search of another equaliser, but that only left gaps at the back. Torque sealed the win on 82 minutes when Facundo Martínez finished off a swift counter-attack, slotting past the advancing goalkeeper. The closing minutes were comfortable for the visitors, who managed the game professionally.

Tactical Story

Torque set up in a 4-3-3 that prioritised quick ball recovery and vertical passing. Their midfield trio pressed aggressively, cutting off River Plate’s supply lines to the forwards. River Plate, by contrast, relied on long spells of possession that lacked penetration. Once Torque took the lead for the second time, River Plate’s shape became stretched, and the visitors exploited the space with ruthless efficiency. The substitution of Gómez and Martínez in the second half added fresh legs and directness, which proved decisive.

Standout Players

• Nicolás Siri (Torque): Opened the scoring with a composed finish and consistently troubled the River Plate defence with his movement.
• Emiliano Gómez (Torque): Scored a superb individual goal and controlled the tempo in the final third.
• Facundo Martínez (Torque): Came off the bench to score the clinching goal and added energy on the counter.
• Franco Nicola (River Plate): Took his goal well and was a threat from set-pieces, but lacked support in the second half.

Reserve League Context

The Uruguay Reserve League is a vital stepping stone for young players aiming to break into first-team football. Victory for Montevideo City Torque Reserves reinforces their strong youth pipeline, which has produced several first-team regulars in recent seasons. For CA River Plate Reserves, the result is a learning experience. They showed promise in the first half but must improve their game management and defensive compactness if they are to climb the reserve table. Torque, meanwhile, will take confidence from a mature away performance that combined intensity, organisation, and quality in the final third.
