Fenix Mariupol 2-1 Polissya Zhytomyr B — a hard-earned home victory in the Ukrainian First League, decided by a goal in the closing stages after the visitors had fought their way back into the contest. Fenix Mariupol led early, were pegged back midway through the second half, and then found the decisive moment in the final quarter of an hour to take all three points.

Match Overview

Fenix Mariupol started the brighter of the two sides, pressing the visitors' build-up and forcing a series of early turnovers in the middle third. That pressure produced the opening goal, and for a spell the home side looked capable of running away with the game. Polissya Zhytomyr B, however, adjusted well: they dropped their defensive line slightly deeper, invited pressure, and began hitting on the counter with real purpose.

The equaliser arrived after the interval and briefly shifted the momentum, but Fenix responded with the kind of second-half management that suggests a team growing in confidence in the division.

Key Moments

• 17' — 1-0 Fenix Mariupol: Sustained pressure down the left produced a cut-back that was swept home from the edge of the six-yard box.
• 34' — Chance for two: A free header from a corner drifted just wide, a warning the home side failed to heed.
• 61' — 1-1: Polissya Zhytomyr B broke at speed after winning the ball in midfield, finishing low across the goalkeeper to level the score.
• 78' — 2-1 Fenix Mariupol: A driving run from midfield drew defenders and opened space for a composed finish inside the area — the winner.
• 90+2' — Late block: A brave defensive block in the penalty area preserved the lead in the final seconds.

Tactical Story

The game turned into a contest between two contrasting ideas. Fenix Mariupol wanted to dominate the ball, use width, and overload the flanks; Polissya Zhytomyr B, as a second team with younger, quicker players, were happy to concede possession and attack in transition. For much of the first half the hosts controlled the ball, but the visitors' counter-attacking structure kept the match alive.

Fenix's decisive adjustment came with a switch to a slightly more direct approach in the last 20 minutes. Rather than trying to play through a packed middle, they began going long into the channels and winning second balls higher up the pitch. That change produced the winning goal, born from exactly the kind of turnover the visitors had been thriving on.

Standout Performers

Fenix's central midfield was the engine room of the performance, dictating tempo, breaking lines with forward passes, and covering defensively when the counters came. The winning goalscorer deserved the plaudits for a technically excellent finish under pressure, while the goalkeeper produced an important stop at 1-1 to keep the scoreline level.

For Polissya Zhytomyr B, the wide forward who scored the equaliser was the outstanding individual on the pitch, combining pace with intelligent movement across the front line.

Table and Season Impact

Victories like this carry extra weight in the Ukrainian First League, where the fixture list is long, travel is demanding, and the margin between mid-table and the promotion places is often a handful of points. Fenix Mariupol's ability to grind out a narrow home win after surrendering a lead is a marker of a squad maturing into a genuine threat in the second tier.

Polissya Zhytomyr B leave with credit but no reward. Their reserve side exists to develop players for the senior squad, and on this evidence the pipeline is healthy — the challenge is converting promising transitions into points on the road.
