Metalist 1925 Kharkiv survived a scare in the Ukrainian Cup on Wednesday evening, coming from behind to beat amateur side Mayak Sarny 2-1 and book their place in the next round. Played at the Mayak Stadium in Sarny, the tie had the classic cup ingredients: a lower-league host with nothing to lose, an early shock goal, and a professional opponent forced to dig deep before finally imposing its quality.

A cup tie with an early twist

Mayak Sarny set the tone from the first whistle, pressing with energy and refusing to sit deep. The home side’s reward arrived in the 18th minute when captain Oleh Kovalenko rose highest to meet a corner and powered a header past the Metalist goalkeeper. The stadium erupted, and for a while the Ukrainian Cup script looked set for a major upset.

Metalist 1925 Kharkiv were rattled but not broken. The visitors gradually settled into possession, moving the ball through midfield and testing Mayak’s compact defensive block. Their equaliser came eight minutes before half-time, when Dmytro Kravchuk latched onto a loose ball at the edge of the box and drove a low finish into the bottom corner.

Key moments that decided the tie

• 18’ – Mayak Sarny 1-0: Kovalenko’s header from a corner gives the hosts a shock lead.
• 37’ – Mayak Sarny 1-1: Kravchuk’s low strike restores parity for Metalist 1925.
• 55’ – Goalkeeping heroics: Mayak goalkeeper Bohdan Savchuk denies Metalist’s Ihor Pavlenko from close range.
• 78’ – Mayak Sarny 1-2: Substitute Maksym Doroshenko finishes a flowing move to put the visitors ahead.
• 90+3’ – Late pressure: Mayak send bodies forward, but Metalist see out the final set-piece.

Tactical story: patience versus passion

Mayak Sarny’s plan was clear: defend in numbers, stay compact in the central corridor, and use set-pieces and quick transitions to trouble their professional visitors. For long spells it worked. Their back line held firm, and Savchuk produced a string of saves to keep the tie alive.

Metalist 1925 Kharkiv, however, used their possession more intelligently after the break. The introduction of fresh legs in wide areas stretched Mayak’s defensive block, and the winning goal came from exactly that source — a switch of play, a driving run, and a composed finish from Doroshenko. It was the kind of moment that separates full-time teams from committed amateur opposition.

Standout performers

Savchuk was the obvious hero for Mayak Sarny, making several important stops and commanding his area under pressure. Kovalenko’s leadership and goal underlined why he is so important to the home side. For Metalist 1925 Kharkiv, Pavlenko controlled the tempo in midfield, while Kravchuk’s equaliser changed the mood of the contest. Doroshenko, the match-winner, made the decisive impact from the bench.

What the result means

The victory sends Metalist 1925 Kharkiv into the next round of the Ukrainian Cup, where they will expect a more comfortable evening against higher-ranked opposition. For Mayak Sarny, the defeat will sting, but the performance — and the atmosphere at the Mayak Stadium — was a reminder of what makes the Ukrainian Cup one of the most compelling competitions on the calendar. The home side exit with credit, having pushed a professional club all the way.
