AZ Alkmaar U19 responded calmly rather than rushing their play. They began to win more of the ball in midfield, stretched the pitch with wide rotations and created space between Goztepe’s defensive lines. Tactical story

Goztepe U19’s early plan was clear: press aggressively, play forward quickly and use the energy of the home crowd. It worked for the opening period, and their lead was deserved. However, the high tempo came at a cost, and as the match wore on, Goztepe’s pressing lines became easier for AZ to play through.

AZ Alkmaar U19 adapted well. Their midfielders dropped deeper to receive the ball, the full-backs pushed higher to provide width and the front players made intelligent runs in behind. Once AZ established control, Goztepe were forced to defend longer spells. The winning goal came from exactly that pattern: sustained possession, a turnover in a dangerous area and a clinical finish.

Standout performers

AZ Alkmaar U19’s midfield was central to the comeback, controlling the tempo and linking defence with attack. The wide players were a constant outlet, stretching Goztepe’s back line and creating space for the equaliser. At the back, AZ’s centre-backs grew stronger as the game progressed and dealt well with Goztepe’s late crosses.

For Goztepe U19, the opening goal was a reward for their aggressive start, and their goalkeeper made several important saves to keep the score level for long periods. Their captain tried to drive the team forward in the second half, but AZ’s control of midfield made it difficult for Goztepe to sustain pressure.

UEFA Youth League impact

The 2-1 win strengthens AZ Alkmaar U19’s position in the UEFA Youth League and gives them valuable momentum in the campaign. For Goztepe U19, the result is a learning experience: their early promise was clear, but the game highlighted the importance of maintaining structure when the opponent takes control.

Both teams will take lessons into their next UEFA Youth League fixtures. AZ will look to build on the second-half performance, while Goztepe will focus on turning bright starts into complete 90-minute displays.
