AZ Alkmaar U19 3-1 Goztepe U19: Dutch academy side show their class in UEFA Youth League

AZ Alkmaar U19 produced a polished second-half display to defeat Goztepe U19 3-1 in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday. The Dutch side’s technical quality and superior fitness told in the end, as they turned a tight contest into a comfortable victory at their training complex.

Goztepe arrived with a physical approach and caused AZ problems early on, but the hosts’ patience and movement eventually wore the Turkish side down. The win strengthens AZ’s position in the competition and underlines the club’s reputation for developing top young talent.

Match overview

The first half was evenly contested, with Goztepe pressing aggressively and looking to disrupt AZ’s short passing game. AZ took the lead through a neat team move but were pegged back before the break when Goztepe scored from a set piece. The equaliser gave the visitors confidence, but it also sparked AZ into a higher gear after half-time.

In the second half, AZ’s midfield began to dominate possession. The hosts created a string of chances and retook the lead with a fine individual effort. A third goal late on capped a strong performance and reflected their control of the game.

Key moments

• AZ’s opener: A fluid passing move ended with a low finish into the corner.
• Goztepe equaliser: A well-delivered free-kick caused confusion in the AZ box and was converted from close range.
• AZ’s second: A solo run from the left wing ended with a powerful strike into the roof of the net.
• Late third: AZ sealed the win with a composed finish after a quick counter-attack.

Tactical story

AZ’s 4-3-3 shape allowed them to dominate the midfield triangle, with the No. 6 dictating play and the two No. 8s pushing forward. Goztepe’s aggressive man-marking worked early but left gaps as the game progressed. AZ’s coaching staff made a subtle tactical adjustment at half-time, asking the full-backs to push higher and stretch Goztepe’s back line, which proved decisive.

Standout players

AZ’s captain in midfield was the standout performer, controlling the tempo and breaking up Goztepe’s attacks. The left winger was a constant threat, scoring one and assisting another, while the centre-back pairing dealt comfortably with Goztepe’s long-ball approach in the second half. Goztepe’s goalkeeper made several impressive saves to keep the score down, and their striker worked tirelessly despite limited service.

What the result means

The victory gives AZ Alkmaar U19 valuable momentum in the UEFA Youth League and highlights the depth of talent in their academy. For Goztepe U19, the defeat is a learning experience against one of Europe’s most respected youth setups. AZ’s ability to adapt tactically and physically outlast their opponents will serve them well in the knockout stages.
