Latvia U17 Women and Lithuania U17 Women played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their UEFA European U17 Women’s Championship qualifying match on Wednesday, 7 October 2026. The Baltic derby delivered four goals, momentum swings, and a late equaliser that kept both teams’ hopes alive in the group.

Match Overview

Latvia U17 Women began brightly and dictated the early tempo, but Lithuania U17 Women struck first against the run of play. The lead changed hands in the second half before a dramatic late goal rescued a point for Lithuania. With the 19:00 kick-off under the lights, the match had the feel of a proper derby: physical, fast, and full of midfield duels.

Both sides showed why they are capable of scoring quickly. Latvia’s attacking rotations caused problems, while Lithuania’s direct running and set-piece delivery kept the pressure on. In the end, a draw was a fair reflection of a contest in which neither team managed to hold a winning position for long.

• 12th minute – Lithuania 1-0: Gabija Petrauskaitė gave Lithuania the lead with a low strike from the edge of the box after a quick turnover in midfield.
• 34th minute – Latvia 1-1: Elza Bērziņa equalised for Latvia, finishing neatly at the near post after a driving run from the left wing.

• 84th minute – Lithuania 2-2: Ugnė Jankauskaitė rescued a point for Lithuania, converting from close range after a goalmouth scramble following a free-kick.

Tactical Story

Latvia U17 Women used a 4-2-3-1 shape and looked to overload the flanks, with their full-backs providing width and their central midfielders arriving late in the box. That approach produced the corner from which they scored their second goal, and it kept Lithuania pinned back for long stretches of the second half.

Lithuania U17 Women were more direct, often looking for the striker’s movement in behind. Their pressing forced several turnovers in dangerous areas, and their willingness to shoot from distance kept Latvia’s goalkeeper alert. The late equaliser came from sustained pressure and a set-piece delivery that Latvia failed to clear cleanly.

Standout Players

Elza Bērziņa was Latvia’s most dangerous attacker, combining pace with excellent close control. Anete Ozola delivered a captain’s performance in midfield and scored the goal that briefly put her side in front. Latvia’s goalkeeper also made two important saves in the first half to keep the deficit manageable.

For Lithuania, Gabija Petrauskaitė set the tone with her early goal and continued to link play effectively. Ugnė Jankauskaitė showed composure for the late equaliser, reacting quickest in a crowded penalty area. Her goal could prove valuable when the final group standings are calculated.

What the Result Means

The draw leaves both teams with a point from the fixture and keeps the qualifying group tightly poised. Latvia will feel they did enough to win after leading late, while Lithuania will take confidence from their fighting spirit and ability to score in the closing stages. The head-to-head record remains balanced, and goal difference could become important later in the campaign.

For Latvia U17 Women, the focus will be on game management after taking the lead. For Lithuania U17 Women, the challenge is to turn strong spells into more consistent control. Both sides remain in contention, and this 2-2 result adds another memorable chapter to their youth-level rivalry.
