Union Saint-Gilloise 1-1 Real Sociedad: Spoils Shared in Europa League Opener

Union Saint-Gilloise and Real Sociedad played out a competitive 1-1 draw in their UEFA Europa League league phase opener at the Stade Joseph Marien. The Belgian side took the lead through Dennis Eckert, but Real Sociedad equalised in the second half via a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty to earn a share of the points.

It was a game of two contrasting styles, with Union’s high-intensity pressing matched by Real Sociedad’s patient possession play. Both teams had chances to win it, but a draw was a fair reflection of an evenly contested 90 minutes.

Match Overview

Union Saint-Gilloise started brightly and took the lead in the 22nd minute. A quick turnover in midfield allowed Eckert to run at the defence, and he finished expertly across the goalkeeper into the far corner. The home crowd erupted, and Union continued to press for a second goal before half-time.

Real Sociedad gradually grew into the game and equalised in the 63rd minute after a foul inside the box. Oyarzabal stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot. The Spanish side then pushed for a winner, but Union’s defence, marshalled by their experienced goalkeeper Anthony Moris, held firm.

Both teams had late half-chances, but neither could find the decisive finish. The draw leaves both sides with a point to build on in the new Europa League format.

Key Moments

• 22’ – Union 1-0: Dennis Eckert races clear and finishes calmly into the bottom corner.
• 45+1’ – Chance: Real Sociedad hit the side netting after a flowing move down the right.

Tactical Story

Union Saint-Gilloise set up in a 3-5-2 that allowed their wing-backs to push forward and create width. Their pressing was aggressive and forced Real Sociedad into several early mistakes. However, as the game progressed, Real Sociedad’s 4-3-3 began to find pockets of space between Union’s midfield and defence, with Oyarzabal and their creative midfielders linking play effectively.

The penalty changed the momentum, and Real Sociedad controlled the final 20 minutes. Union responded by dropping deeper and looking to counter, but they lacked the final pass to unlock a well-drilled Spanish defence.

Standout Players

Dennis Eckert was a constant threat for Union with his pace and direct running. Goalkeeper Anthony Moris produced a vital save to preserve the draw. For Real Sociedad, Mikel Oyarzabal was composed from the spot and linked play intelligently throughout.

What It Means for the Europa League Table

Both teams sit on one point after the opening matchday, with everything still to play for in the league phase. Union Saint-Gilloise will be pleased to have avoided defeat against a strong La Liga opponent, while Real Sociedad may feel they did enough to win. The result sets up an intriguing race for knockout-stage qualification.
