Real Sociedad 1-2 Bournemouth: Cherries Clinch Impressive Away Win in San Sebastián

Bournemouth produced one of the standout results of the UEFA Europa League league phase so far, winning 2-1 away at Real Sociedad. The Premier League side fell behind to a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty but responded with two second-half goals to take a famous victory from the Reale Arena.

It was a performance full of the qualities that have made Bournemouth a difficult opponent for anyone: relentless running, aggressive pressing and a willingness to attack even when the crowd is against them.

Match Overview

• Competition: UEFA Europa League – League Phase
• Fixture: Real Sociedad vs Bournemouth
• Final Score: Real Sociedad 1-2 Bournemouth
• Key Moment: Bournemouth's equaliser early in the second half completely shifted the momentum

First Half: Sociedad Take Control

The opening exchanges were played at a high tempo, with Real Sociedad attempting to establish their usual rhythm through short, quick passes in midfield. Bournemouth's response was to press man-for-man, which created a scrappy but even contest for the first half hour.

The breakthrough came from the penalty spot. A driving run into the box drew a foul, and Oyarzabal — the club captain and one of the most reliable finishers in Spanish football — sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 1-0. The Reale Arena responded with the kind of noise that has intimidated many visiting teams over the years.

Second Half: Bournemouth Turn the Tide

Whatever was said at half-time worked. Bournemouth emerged with greater intensity, pushing their defensive line higher and committing more players into the final third. Within ten minutes of the restart they were level, Evanilson reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the area and finishing from close range.

Suddenly it was Real Sociedad who looked rattled. Their passing became longer and less precise, and the space between their midfield and defence began to grow. Antoine Semenyo, a constant menace on the right, exploited that gap repeatedly.

The winning goal arrived in the final twenty minutes. A turnover in the middle third allowed Bournemouth to break at speed, and Semenyo cut inside from the flank before curling a left-footed strike beyond the goalkeeper. From that point, the visitors defended with discipline and saw out the remaining minutes without serious alarm.

Tactical Story

The game was decided by transitions. Real Sociedad wanted a controlled, possession-based match, but Bournemouth's willingness to press aggressively meant the ball changed hands constantly. Every loose touch became a potential counter-attack, and the visitors were clearly content with that trade-off.

Defensively, Bournemouth's centre-backs defended their box well in the closing stages, dealing with a late wave of crosses and set pieces. Their goalkeeper also produced two important saves in the final ten minutes to protect the lead.

Standout Players

• Antoine Semenyo (Bournemouth): Scored the winner and was a threat every time he received the ball.
• Evanilson (Bournemouth): His equaliser was the turning point of the match.
• Mikel Oyarzabal (Real Sociedad): Converted his penalty confidently and remained the home side's most creative presence.

What It Means

Three points on the road in Spain is a significant statement of intent from Bournemouth and gives them real momentum in the league phase. Real Sociedad, meanwhile, are left to reflect on a frustrating night in which they controlled long spells without creating enough clear chances, and they will need to be more clinical in their upcoming fixtures.
