NK Publikum Celje 0-3 Omonia Nicosia: Clinical Omonia Punish Celje in Europa League

Omonia Nicosia produced one of the most impressive away performances of the UEFA Europa League matchday, defeating NK Publikum Celje 3-0 at Stadion Z’dežele. A brace from Loizos Loizou and a late third from Andronikos Kakoullis gave the Cypriot side a commanding victory that flattered neither their dominance nor their finishing.

Celje, playing in front of their home supporters, struggled to break down a well-organised Omonia defence and were repeatedly caught on the counter-attack. The result leaves the Slovenian side without a point, while Omonia climb the league phase standings with a statement win.

Match Overview

Omonia started on the front foot and took the lead in the 12th minute when Loizou cut inside from the right and curled a left-footed shot into the far corner. Celje tried to respond through long spells of possession, but their final ball was often hurried and inaccurate.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 67th minute, again through Loizou, who finished off a rapid counter-attack after Celje lost the ball in midfield. The third goal arrived in the 78th minute when Kakoullis converted a penalty following a foul inside the area. By then, the contest was effectively over.

Celje’s best chance fell to their captain in the 38th minute, but a fine save from Omonia goalkeeper Fabiano kept the score at 1-0 and preserved the visitors’ momentum.

Key Moments

• 12’ – Omonia 1-0: Loizos Loizou curls a superb effort beyond the Celje goalkeeper.
• 38’ – Save: Fabiano reacts quickly to deny Celje an equaliser from close range.
• 67’ – Omonia 2-0: Loizou completes his brace after a lightning counter-attack.
• 78’ – Omonia 3-0: Andronikos Kakoullis sends the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot.
• 88’ – Late chance: Celje hit the post through a header, summing up their frustrating night.

Tactical Story

Celje set up in a 4-3-3 and tried to build patiently from the back, but Omonia’s 4-2-3-1 mid-block was compact and aggressive. The Cypriots allowed Celje possession in harmless areas before springing forward with speed. Loizou’s movement between the lines was particularly difficult to handle, and Omonia’s two holding midfielders controlled the rhythm of the game.

Celje’s full-backs pushed high in search of width, but that left them exposed to Omonia’s direct running. The penalty for the third goal came from exactly that kind of transition, with Celje unable to recover their defensive shape in time.

Standout Players

Loizos Loizou was the clear man of the match, scoring twice and constantly troubling Celje’s defence. Andronikos Kakoullis added a composed penalty, while goalkeeper Fabiano made crucial saves at 1-0. For Celje, the night was one to forget, though their young midfielder showed glimpses of quality in the second half.

What It Means for the Table

Omonia Nicosia move onto three points and a healthy goal difference, which could prove vital in the congested Europa League league phase. Celje remain on zero points and must regroup quickly before their next European fixture. The 3-0 scoreline is a clear warning that Omonia will be dangerous opponents both home and away this season.
