Lech Poznan 0-4 Bayer Leverkusen: Leverkusen Deliver Statement Away Win

Bayer Leverkusen produced a ruthless display in the UEFA Europa League, dismantling Lech Poznan 4-0 at the Stadion Miejski. A first-half brace from Patrik Schick, followed by goals from Alejandro Grimaldo and Victor Boniface, gave the German side a comprehensive victory that underlined their status as one of the favourites for the competition.

Lech Poznan, backed by a passionate home crowd, were never allowed to settle. Leverkusen’s high pressing and quick passing carved open the Polish champions time and again, and the scoreline could have been even more emphatic.

Match Overview

Leverkusen needed just seven minutes to take the lead. A misplaced pass in Lech’s midfield was intercepted, and Schick raced clear before finishing low into the corner. The visitors doubled their advantage in the 28th minute when Schick headed home a precise cross from the left.

Lech tried to respond after the break, but Leverkusen’s third goal in the 52nd minute killed the contest. Grimaldo, marauding forward from left wing-back, exchanged passes with a teammate before firing into the roof of the net. Boniface completed the rout in the 75th minute, converting a rebound after the Lech goalkeeper had made a fine initial save.

The home side’s night was summed up by a late red card for a second bookable offence, leaving them to play the final minutes with ten men.

Key Moments

• 7’ – Leverkusen 1-0: Patrik Schick punishes a midfield turnover with a clinical finish.
• 28’ – Leverkusen 2-0: Schick heads in his second from a perfect left-sided cross.
• 52’ – Leverkusen 3-0: Alejandro Grimaldo drives forward and smashes home from the edge of the box.
• 75’ – Leverkusen 4-0: Victor Boniface reacts quickest to a rebound and taps in.
• 82’ – Red card: Lech Poznan are reduced to ten men after a second yellow card.

Tactical Story

Leverkusen lined up in a fluid 3-4-2-1 that allowed their wing-backs to push high and create overloads. Lech’s 4-2-3-1 struggled to cope with the movement of Schick and the two attacking midfielders, who repeatedly found space between the lines. Leverkusen’s counter-press was also outstanding, winning the ball back within seconds of losing it.

Lech attempted to play out from the back, but Leverkusen’s aggressive man-oriented pressing forced errors. When the home side did manage to break the first line, they found themselves outnumbered in the final third. It was a tactical masterclass from the Bundesliga side.

Standout Players

Patrik Schick was unstoppable, scoring twice and linking play intelligently. Alejandro Grimaldo was a constant threat from the left, while Victor Boniface added power and precision off the bench. Lech’s goalkeeper made several saves to keep the score respectable, but he was left exposed by his defence.

What It Means for the Europa League Standings

Bayer Leverkusen top the early league phase table with a superior goal difference, sending a clear message to their rivals. Lech Poznan remain on zero points and face a difficult task to recover. For Leverkusen, the win is a confidence boost as they balance domestic and European commitments, and it confirms their ambition to go deep in the competition.
