Bournemouth AFC delivered a dominant UEFA Europa League performance on Matchday 3, brushing aside Sturm Graz 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium on October 16, 2026. The Cherries scored through Evanilson, Antoine Semenyo, and Justin Kluivert to claim a comfortable victory that strengthens their position in the league phase.

Match Overview

From the opening whistle, Bournemouth set a high tempo, pressing Sturm Graz into mistakes and forcing the Austrian side into a deep defensive block. The home team enjoyed the majority of possession and created a string of chances, while Sturm Graz looked to hit on the counter but struggled to maintain any sustained pressure. Bournemouth's midfield trio of Ryan Christie, Lewis Cook, and Alex Scott controlled the rhythm, allowing the full-backs to push high and overload the wings.

Key Moments

• 23' – Goal: Evanilson broke the deadlock with a composed finish after a slick one-two with Justin Kluivert, slotting the ball into the bottom corner from 12 yards.
• 58' – Goal: Antoine Semenyo doubled the lead with a powerful left-footed strike from the edge of the box, following a quick turnover in midfield.
• 79' – Goal: Kluivert added a third, converting a low cross from the right after a driving run by substitute Dango Ouattara.
• 90+2' – Save: Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers denied Sturm Graz a consolation with a strong stop from Otar Kiteishvili's free-kick.

Tactical Story

Bournemouth's 4-2-3-1 shape effectively neutralized Sturm Graz's 4-4-2, with the front four pressing in unison and cutting off passing lanes into midfield. The Austrian side tried to play long to their strikers, but Bournemouth's centre-backs Illia Zabarnyi and Marcos Senesi won the aerial duels consistently. As the game wore on, Sturm Graz's fatigue became evident, and Bournemouth's substitutes added fresh legs to exploit the spaces.

Standout Players

Antoine Semenyo was a constant threat on the right wing, combining pace and power to unsettle the Sturm Graz defence. Evanilson's movement and link-up play were excellent, while Ryan Christie's energy in midfield set the tone. For Sturm Graz, goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen made several saves to keep the score respectable, and Kiteishvili showed flashes of creativity.

Season Impact

The win lifts Bournemouth to four points from three matches in the Europa League league phase, keeping them in contention for a top-eight finish and automatic knockout qualification. Sturm Graz remain on one point and face an uphill battle to advance. Bournemouth will next travel to face a tough away fixture, while Sturm Graz must regroup quickly to avoid slipping further behind.
