Bayer 04 Leverkusen cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory over NK Publikum Celje at the BayArena on September 17, 2026, in the UEFA Europa League league phase. The German side controlled the match from start to finish, scoring once in each half to secure a routine win that keeps them on track for a deep European run.

Match Overview

Leverkusen dominated possession and created a steady stream of chances throughout the 90 minutes. They took the lead midway through the first half through a well-placed finish, then doubled their advantage shortly after the break with a header from a set-piece. Celje, making a rare trip to a major European venue, defended bravely but rarely threatened the Leverkusen goal.

Key Moments

• 31′ – Leverkusen 1-0 Celje: Victor Boniface opened the scoring with a powerful low drive from inside the box after a neat lay-off.
• 57′ – Leverkusen 2-0 Celje: Patrik Schick doubled the lead, rising highest to head home a corner from the left.
• 74′ – Celje chance: The visitors’ best moment came from a free-kick, but the effort sailed just over the bar.
• 89′ – Leverkusen near miss: Florian Wirtz rattled the crossbar with a curling shot as Leverkusen pushed for a third.

Tactical Story

Leverkusen’s 3-4-2-1 system allowed them to dominate the midfield and overload the flanks, pinning Celje deep in their own half. The Slovenian side tried to sit compact and counter, but they struggled to retain possession long enough to relieve pressure. Leverkusen’s pressing was relentless, and their quick ball circulation repeatedly opened up gaps in the Celje defence.

Standout Players

• Victor Boniface (Leverkusen): Opened the scoring and was a constant physical presence up front.
• Patrik Schick (Leverkusen): Came off the bench to seal the win with a trademark header.
• Florian Wirtz (Leverkusen): Dictated the tempo and was desperately unlucky not to score.

What It Means

Leverkusen move to six points from their opening two Europa League matches and look every bit like genuine contenders for the trophy. For Celje, the defeat is a harsh lesson in the step up in quality, but they will take encouragement from their defensive organisation. Leverkusen next face a tougher test, but this was a professional and confident performance.
