Anderlecht fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Lyon at Lotto Park on September 17, 2026, in a hard-fought UEFA Europa League league-phase match. The French side’s clinical finishing and big-game experience proved decisive, as they twice took the lead before holding off a spirited second-half comeback from the Belgian hosts.

Match Overview

Lyon started the stronger and took the lead inside the opening 20 minutes through a well-crafted team move. Anderlecht responded well and equalised shortly after the hour mark, but Lyon restored their advantage almost immediately from a corner. The home side pushed hard for another equaliser in the final 15 minutes, but Lyon’s defence held firm to secure all three points.

Key Moments

• 18′ – Anderlecht 0-1 Lyon: Alexandre Lacazette finished off a slick passing move with a first-time strike from the edge of the area.
• 62′ – Anderlecht 1-1 Lyon: Kasper Dolberg levelled for the hosts, turning smartly in the box and firing low into the net.
• 69′ – Anderlecht 1-2 Lyon: Rayan Cherki restored Lyon’s lead with a precise free-kick that curled just inside the post.
• 84′ – Anderlecht chance: Anders Dreyer forced a strong save from the Lyon goalkeeper as the hosts pressed for a late equaliser.

Tactical Story

Lyon’s midfield controlled the tempo for long spells, using quick combinations to bypass Anderlecht’s press. The Belgian side struggled to contain Lyon’s movement between the lines, particularly in the first half. After the break, Anderlecht adjusted by pushing their wing-backs higher, which created more chances but also left them vulnerable to counters. Ultimately, Lyon’s superior quality in transition made the difference.

Standout Players

• Alexandre Lacazette (Lyon): Led the line with class, scoring the opener and linking play intelligently.
• Rayan Cherki (Lyon): Provided the match-winning moment with a brilliant free-kick.
• Kasper Dolberg (Anderlecht): Took his goal well and was a constant handful for Lyon’s defenders.

What It Means

Anderlecht remain without a win in the Europa League league phase, and the pressure is mounting ahead of their next European fixture. Lyon, meanwhile, move onto four points and look increasingly likely to challenge for a top-eight finish. The result also extends Lyon’s strong recent record against Belgian opposition in European competition.
