Huancarama: The Andean Warriors of Apurímac

Huancarama is a Peruvian football club from the town of Huancarama, located in the province of Andahuaylas, in the Apurímac region. The team competes in the regional leagues of the Copa Perú, representing the highland communities with passion and determination.

Origins and Cultural Roots

Founded in 1976, the club takes its name from the Quechua phrase Wanqarama, meaning "the place of the hanging rock". The club's crest features an image of a condor and the snow-capped peaks of the Andes. Colours are red and white, symbolising the blood of the indigenous resistance and the snow on the mountains.

Huancarama plays its home matches at the Estadio Los Chankas in Andahuaylas, a 10,000-capacity venue that often sees altitudes exceeding 2,900 metres, giving the home side a significant advantage over lowland visitors.

On the Pitch: Grit and Tradition

The team is known for its relentless work rate and aerial prowess, built around the physical demands of altitude football. Huancarama has produced several players who went on to play in the Peruvian top flight, most notably striker Ronald Quispe, who scored 15 goals for Cienciano in the 2010s.

In the 2023 Copa Perú season, Huancarama reached the regional final of Apurímac, losing to Deportivo Municipal de Abancay in a penalty shootout. The 2024 campaign saw a rebuilding phase, with the club finishing mid-table after losing key players to transfers.

Community and Ambition

For the town of Huancarama (population roughly 4,000), the club is the central sporting institution. Matches draw crowds from surrounding villages, and local businesses sponsor players' kits and travel expenses.

The club's long-term ambition is to break through to the national stage of the Copa Perú and eventually gain promotion to Liga 2. With growing support from the regional government and a new youth academy partnership with a club from Lima, Huancarama aims to become a regular contender in Andean football.
