Grasshopper 2-5 FC Sion: Seven-Goal Thriller Ends in Away Rout

FC Sion produced a stunning attacking display to thrash Grasshopper 5-2 in the Switzerland Super League on September 16, 2026, at the Stadion Letzigrund. The match was a rollercoaster of goals, but Sion's clinical finishing and relentless pressure ultimately overwhelmed a fragile Grasshopper defence.

Match Overview

Grasshopper started brightly and took a surprise lead in the 7th minute through forward Noah Loosli, who latched onto a through ball and slotted past the goalkeeper. But Sion responded immediately, equalising in the 14th minute when Mario Babic headed home from a corner. The visitors then took control, scoring twice more before half-time through Gaëtan Karlen and Luca Zuffi, both goals coming from quick passing moves that sliced open the Grasshopper defence.

Early in the second half, Grasshopper pulled one back through a penalty converted by Petar Pusic in the 52nd minute, giving the home fans hope. But Sion extinguished that hope almost immediately, with Babic scoring his second in the 58th minute and Karlen completing the rout in the 74th minute. The final scoreline flattered Grasshopper, who were second-best for long periods.

Tactical Story

Sion's 4-2-3-1 allowed their attacking midfielders to find pockets of space between Grasshopper's defence and midfield. The visitors pressed high and forced turnovers, which led directly to several goals. Grasshopper, meanwhile, were guilty of poor marking and a lack of communication at the back. Their midfield struggled to track Sion's runners, and the defence was repeatedly exposed.

Grasshopper's manager tried to change things at half-time, switching to a back three, but that only made the situation worse as Sion exploited the extra space out wide. It was a tactical masterclass from Sion, who looked dangerous every time they went forward.

Standout Players

Mario Babic was outstanding for Sion, scoring twice and causing problems all game with his movement and aerial ability. Gaëtan Karlen also bagged a brace, while Luca Zuffi dictated the tempo from midfield. For Grasshopper, Noah Loosli took his goal well, but the defensive unit will want to forget this performance quickly.

Super League Table Impact

The win lifts FC Sion up the Super League table, boosting their goal difference significantly and sending a message to their rivals. Grasshopper, on the other hand, remain in a precarious position and will need to tighten up defensively if they are to climb away from the lower reaches of the standings. The result also highlights the gap in quality between the two sides on current form.
