Servette U21 continued their strong form in the Switzerland Division 2 League with a 1-2 away victory over FC Portalban/Gletterens on Thursday, a result built on early initiative and a well-taken winner in the final quarter of the match.

The young Geneva side controlled long spells of the game, survived a determined second-half response from the hosts and left with three points that reflect their growing maturity in the fourth tier of Swiss football.

Match Overview

Servette's under-21 side, competing in the 1. Liga Classic, arrived with the familiar blend of technical quality and youthful energy that has made them awkward opponents all season. They started on the front foot, pressing Portalban/Gletterens high and forcing mistakes in the hosts' build-up.

That pressure told in the first half. A patient passing move drew the home defence to one side before the ball was switched quickly to the opposite flank, and the resulting cross was converted with a first-time finish to give the visitors the lead.

Portalban/Gletterens improved markedly after the interval. Their midfield began winning the ball higher up the pitch, and an equaliser arrived ten minutes into the second half when a cleverly-worked move opened up space on the edge of the box. With the momentum shifting, an upset looked possible — but Servette responded like a team with real structure, regaining control and scoring the decisive goal in the closing stages.

Key Moments

• 18' — Servette U21 take the lead with a first-time finish after a sweeping team move.
• 37' — Portalban/Gletterens' best chance of the first half flashes wide from a counter-attack.
• 55' — The hosts equalise with a well-placed strike from the edge of the area.
• 79' — Servette U21 score the winner, finishing off a cut-back from the byline.
• 90' — Portalban/Gletterens push bodies forward but cannot find a second equaliser.

Tactical Story

Servette's use of width was the defining feature of the match. Their wingers hugged the touchline, stretching Portalban/Gletterens' back four and creating space for late-arriving midfield runners. The opening goal was a textbook example of this approach, as was the late winner.

Portalban/Gletterens adjusted well after half-time, pressing higher and forcing Servette into longer passes. For twenty minutes, the game was genuinely in the balance. But the visitors' superior fitness and squad depth eventually told, particularly in the final fifteen minutes when the tempo dropped for the hosts.

Standout Players

The Servette U21 winger who assisted the winner was a constant menace, beating his marker repeatedly in one-on-one situations. Their central midfielder dictated the tempo with a mature, composed performance, and the goalkeeper produced a crucial save at 1-1 to keep the game level.

For Portalban/Gletterens, the goalscorer was their brightest spark, combining intelligent movement with tidy link-up play. The home captain led by example in midfield but was ultimately overrun in the closing stages.

What It Means for the Table

The win strengthens Servette U21's position in the Switzerland Division 2 League and continues their push towards the upper reaches of the 1. Liga Classic standings. For FC Portalban/Gletterens, the defeat is a frustrating one, having fought their way back into the contest, but their second-half display offers encouragement for the fixtures ahead.

Both teams now face important matches in the coming weeks, with Servette looking to maintain their momentum and Portalban/Gletterens aiming to turn promising performances into points.
