Tatran Prešov Women Stun Ružomberok with Late Winner

FC Tatran Prešov Women came from behind to beat MFK Ružomberok Women 2-1 in the Slovak Women's First Division (SVK WD1) on September 26, 2026. The match, played at the Štadión pod Čebraťom, saw the visitors dig deep and snatch a dramatic victory with a goal in the final minutes.

Match Overview

Ružomberok started the game as favourites and took the lead early on, controlling possession and creating several chances. However, Prešov grew into the contest, defending resiliently and hitting on the counter. They equalised just before half-time, and in a tense second half, both sides had opportunities to win it. It was Prešov who found the decisive moment, scoring in the 88th minute to claim a memorable three points on the road.

Key Moments

• 18th minute: Ružomberok took the lead through a well-placed shot from Lucia Kováčová, who found the bottom corner after a neat exchange on the edge of the box.
• 44th minute: Prešov equalised against the run of play. Petra Nováková intercepted a loose pass and raced clear before finishing coolly past the goalkeeper.
• 88th minute: The winner arrived for Prešov. Substitute Michaela Šimková swung in a free-kick from the left, and the ball evaded everyone before nestling in the far corner.
• 90+3 minutes: Ružomberok threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, but Prešov’s defence held firm to secure the upset.

Tactical Analysis

Ružomberok set up in a 4-3-3, looking to dominate the midfield and feed their wingers. They succeeded for long periods but were repeatedly frustrated by Prešov’s deep and disciplined 4-4-2 block. The visitors were happy to concede possession and hit on the break, and their plan worked perfectly. Ružomberok’s full-backs pushed high, leaving space in behind, and Prešov exploited that for their equaliser. The winning goal came from a set-piece, an area where Prešov had clearly done their homework.

Standout Players

Petra Nováková was outstanding for Prešov, not only for her goal but for her relentless pressing and link-up play. Michaela Šimková made the difference off the bench with that crucial assist. For Ružomberok, Lucia Kováčová was their most dangerous player, but she lacked support in the final third. Goalkeeper Andrea Horváthová also made several important saves to keep Prešov in the game.

League Table Impact

This victory lifts Tatran Prešov Women up the SVK WD1 standings and gives them a major confidence boost. For Ružomberok, it is a missed opportunity to keep pace with the league’s top teams. The result underlines the competitiveness of the Slovak women’s top flight, where any team can beat any other on their day.
