UD Melilla secured a solid 2-0 home victory over Malaga City in the Spanish Tercera División RFEF on Sunday, extending their strong form at the Estadio Municipal Álvarez Claro. Two second-half goals were enough to see off a determined Malaga City side, who competed well but lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

Match overview

The first half was a cagey affair, with both teams cautious in possession. Melilla looked to build patiently from the back, while Malaga City pressed aggressively and tried to disrupt their rhythm. The best chance of the opening period fell to Melilla's striker, who forced a smart save from the visiting goalkeeper after a neat exchange on the edge of the box. At the other end, Malaga City threatened from a couple of crosses but could not find a telling touch.

Melilla raised their intensity after the interval and took the lead in the 54th minute. A driving run from midfield drew defenders, and the ball was squared for a simple finish from eight yards. The second goal arrived fifteen minutes later, a header from a corner that kissed the post on its way in. Malaga City pushed forward in the closing stages, but Melilla's defense held firm, and the home side managed the game comfortably to record a clean sheet.

Tactical story

Melilla's 4-2-3-1 allowed them to control the center of the pitch, with their two holding midfielders shielding the defense and distributing effectively. They targeted Malaga City's left side, where space appeared repeatedly in the second half. Malaga City's high press worked initially but left gaps behind, which Melilla exploited after the break. The visitors also struggled with set pieces, conceding the second goal from a corner. Melilla's game management in the final twenty minutes was professional, as they slowed the tempo and kept possession.

Standout players

Melilla's central midfielder was the heartbeat of the team, breaking up play and launching attacks. The right-back was excellent going forward and delivered the cross for the opening goal. The center-back who scored the second goal also produced a commanding defensive display. For Malaga City, their goalkeeper kept the score down with several saves, while their captain worked tirelessly in midfield but received little support in attack.

Table and season impact

This 2-0 win strengthens UD Melilla's position in the Tercera División RFEF and reinforces their reputation as a tough team to beat at home. Malaga City remain in search of consistency and will need to find more creativity in the final third if they are to climb the table. Melilla's clean sheet is a particular positive, as they aim to build a promotion push. The three points keep them within touching distance of the playoff places, while Malaga City must regroup ahead of their next fixture.
