Pobla de Mafumet CF claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over CFJ Mollerussa in the Spanish Tercera División RFEF, using a strong second-half display to secure all three points on Sunday evening. The home side’s attacking persistence paid off, while Mollerussa were left to rue a missed opportunity to take something from a match that remained finely balanced for long spells.

Pobla de Mafumet edge a close contest

Pobla de Mafumet began the game with purpose, pressing high and forcing Mollerussa into several early clearances. The breakthrough arrived midway through the first half, rewarding the home side’s control of possession and their willingness to attack through the middle. Mollerussa responded well, though, and found an equaliser after the break when a quick counter-attack caught Pobla de Mafumet pushing too many players forward.

The momentum could have swung either way after that, but Pobla de Mafumet regained their composure and found the decisive goal in the closing stages. It was a result built on patience as much as pressure, and it gives the home side a valuable three-point haul in what is always a demanding division.

Key moments

• Pobla de Mafumet took the lead in the first half after a sustained spell of possession, finishing from close range following a low cross into the box.
• Mollerussa equalised after the interval with a fast break, beating the home defence with a well-timed run and a calm finish.
• The winning goal arrived late in the second half, with Pobla de Mafumet converting a chance created by pressure around the edge of the penalty area.
• Mollerussa pushed for a second equaliser in stoppage time, but the home side defended their box well to see out the win.

Tactical story

Pobla de Mafumet’s game plan was clear: dominate the ball, pin Mollerussa back and create chances through quick combinations in the final third. Their midfield worked hard to recover loose balls, and the front line constantly looked to stretch the away defence. Mollerussa, by contrast, were at their most dangerous when breaking at speed. Their equaliser came from exactly that pattern, but they were unable to reproduce it often enough in the final 20 minutes as Pobla de Mafumet tightened their grip on the game.

Standout performers

The Pobla de Mafumet striker produced a strong all-round display, holding the ball up effectively and bringing teammates into play. The home midfield also deserve credit for maintaining intensity late in the match. For Mollerussa, the goalkeeper kept his side in the contest with several important saves, while the away side’s wide players carried a real threat on the counter. In the end, though, Pobla de Mafumet’s greater control of the closing stages made the difference.

What the result means

The win strengthens Pobla de Mafumet’s position and reinforces their home form in the Tercera División RFEF. It is the kind of narrow victory that can matter greatly in a division where fine margins often decide promotion and relegation battles. Mollerussa will take encouragement from their equaliser and their late pressure, but they will also know that conceding a decisive goal so late is a costly lesson. Both teams now turn their attention to the next round of fixtures with plenty still to play for.
