Manchego Ciudad Real left it late but got the job done, winning 1-0 away at Huracán de Balazote in a Tercera División RFEF Group 18 fixture played on Sunday, 20 September 2026. A single goal settled a tight, physical contest in which clear chances were rare and the visitors' patience ultimately proved decisive.

Match overview

Balazote's home ground is not an easy place to visit, and the hosts set up exactly as expected: compact, well-organised and happy to defend in numbers, looking to spring forward on the break. Manchego, one of the more established names in the Castilla-La Mancha group, dominated possession for long stretches but found the final third difficult to unlock against a disciplined back line.

The game's decisive moment arrived in the closing stages, when a patient passing move finally stretched the home defence far enough to create an opening. It was the kind of goal that rewards persistence, and it left Balazote with too little time to respond.

Key moments

• 18': Balazote's best chance of the first half, a header from a corner that drifted just wide of the far post.
• 34': Manchego's first real sight of goal, a shot from the edge of the box deflected behind for a corner.
• 58': A double change from the visitors, adding width and fresh legs to the attack.
• 76': Balazote's goalkeeper produced a sharp save to keep the score level after a low drive from distance.
• 84' — 0-1: Jorge Villar arrived at the near post to convert a low cross and give Manchego the lead.
• 90+3': A late Balazote free-kick was cleared as Manchego held on for the win.

Tactical story

Manchego's approach was built on controlling the ball and forcing Balazote to defend for long periods. The visitors' full-backs pushed extremely high, effectively turning the game into a siege, and the introduction of fresh wide players on the hour mark gave them the extra bit of sharpness needed to break through. Balazote, for their part, defended their penalty area admirably; the issue was that their rare transitions lacked support, meaning lone forwards were often isolated against two centre-backs.

It is a familiar story in the Tercera División RFEF: the team with more of the ball usually wins these matches, but only if it shows the discipline not to get frustrated. Manchego did exactly that, and their late goal was the product of sustained pressure rather than a moment of individual brilliance.

Standout players

Villar's winning goal was the obvious highlight, but Manchego's central defenders deserve credit for a composed display that snuffed out Balazote's counter-attacks before they could develop. The home goalkeeper was arguably the best player on the pitch, making several saves that kept his side level for 84 minutes, while Balazote's captain led by example in midfield with a tireless defensive performance.

Table impact and what comes next

Three away points are always valuable in a group where the promotion race is usually decided by fine margins, and the win keeps Manchego in touch with the leading pack in the Tercera División RFEF Group 18 standings. For Balazote, the defeat is frustrating precisely because the performance was so close to earning a point — the challenge now is to convert those narrow losses into draws and, eventually, wins at home.
