CP Calasancio secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Casalarreina in a Spanish Tercera División RFEF clash between two La Rioja sides that was far more comfortable for long stretches than the final scoreline suggests. Two first-half goals gave the hosts a cushion they defended with maturity, and although Casalarreina pulled one back to set up a nervous finish, Calasancio held on for a result that boosts their standing in the regional group.

Match overview

Local pride was on the line, and the opening exchanges were suitably intense. Calasancio began with purpose, pressing high up the pitch and forcing Casalarreina into hurried clearances. Their reward came inside the opening half hour, when a flowing move down the left ended with a composed finish at the back post.

The second goal arrived before the interval and was arguably the moment of the match — a sharp piece of link-up play on the edge of the box followed by a strike that gave the goalkeeper no chance. At 2-0, the home side looked in complete control.

Key moments

• Opening goal: Calasancio's left-sided attack carved open the defence for the first goal of the afternoon.
• Doubling the lead: a well-worked second goal just before half-time gave the hosts breathing space.
• Casalarreina lifeline: a spirited second-half response produced a goal that changed the complexion of the game.
• Late resistance: Calasancio defended a series of set pieces and crosses in the final 15 minutes to protect the win.

Tactical story

Calasancio's shape was the foundation of the victory. With a compact midfield four screening the defence, they forced Casalarreina to build slowly and then punished turnovers with quick, vertical transitions. The two-goal lead allowed them to sit deeper after the break, inviting pressure but limiting genuine chances.

Casalarreina improved markedly once they introduced fresh legs in wide areas and began delivering early crosses instead of trying to play through the middle. Their goal was the product of exactly that approach, and for a while it looked as though an equaliser might follow. In the end, Calasancio's organisation and willingness to defend as a unit proved decisive.

Standout players

• Calasancio's two scorers: both took their goals with real composure, and their movement caused problems all afternoon.
• Calasancio's holding midfielder: a tireless performance, breaking up play and dictating the tempo.
• Casalarreina's substitute: his introduction transformed the visitors' attacking threat in the second half.
• Calasancio's goalkeeper: one crucial late save preserved the three points.

What it means for the table

Three points in a derby are always significant, and this win strengthens Calasancio's position in the Tercera División RFEF standings while reinforcing their strong home record. Casalarreina will take encouragement from a committed second-half display but are left ruing a slow start that ultimately cost them. In a division where the margins between the promotion places and mid-table are razor thin, wins like this one are exactly what keep a season alive.
