CD Varea edged Alfaro 1-0 in a tense Spanish Tercera División RFEF derby on Sunday, 25 October 2026, with Iker Sáenz’s second-half goal settling a contest short on clear chances but high on intensity.

The win was Varea’s reward for a patient and disciplined display at the Estadio Municipal de Varea. Alfaro defended stubbornly for long periods, but a single moment of quality after the break proved enough to separate the sides in a match that always felt likely to be decided by fine margins.

Match overview

Both teams began cautiously, aware of the local rivalry and the importance of avoiding an early mistake. Varea controlled more of the ball, but Alfaro’s deep defensive block made it difficult for the hosts to find space between the lines. The first half produced few clear openings, with long-range efforts and set pieces carrying the greater threat.

Key moments

The decisive goal came in the 57th minute. Varea worked the ball down the left, and Aitor Gil’s low cross was met by Iker Sáenz, who got across his marker to steer a first-time finish into the net. The goal lifted the home crowd and forced Alfaro to abandon some of their earlier caution.

Alfaro pushed forward in the final 20 minutes and won a series of corners, but Varea’s defence stood strong. The visitors’ best chance arrived in the 84th minute when a header flashed narrowly wide, while Varea goalkeeper Mario Herce dealt confidently with late deliveries into the box. The hosts managed the closing stages well and protected their narrow advantage.

Tactical story

Varea’s win was built on control and patience. They circulated the ball with purpose, switched play when necessary and waited for Alfaro’s defensive line to shift. The introduction of extra width in the second half created the space for the breakthrough, with Gil’s overlap proving decisive.

Alfaro, meanwhile, were organised and difficult to break down for long spells. Their midfield screened the defence effectively, and they limited Varea to few clear sights of goal before the opener. Once they fell behind, however, they lacked the creative spark to unlock a well-drilled Varea back line.

Standout performers

Iker Sáenz will take the headlines for his match-winning goal, but his movement throughout caused problems for Alfaro’s defenders. Aitor Gil was also influential with his energy on the left flank and his assist. For Alfaro, centre-back Javier Roldán produced a composed performance and made several crucial interventions, while goalkeeper Diego Lázaro kept the scoreline respectable with two strong saves.

Table and season impact

The three points lift CD Varea in the Spanish Tercera División RFEF standings and strengthen their position in the race for promotion places. Alfaro leave with nothing despite a disciplined defensive display, and they will need to find more attacking threat in their next fixture. The result also adds weight to Varea’s head-to-head record in what is already shaping up to be a closely contested season.
