Alfaro 1-2 Haro Deportivo: Late winner settles La Rioja derby

Haro Deportivo claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Alfaro in the Spanish Tercera División RFEF on Monday, winning a tense La Rioja derby that was decided by a decisive second-half goal. The result hands Haro bragging rights and valuable points in a competitive regional clash.

Local derbies in Tercera División RFEF are often tight, physical affairs, and this one lived up to that reputation. Alfaro started with intent, using the home support to press forward and test the Haro defence early on. The visitors absorbed the pressure and gradually grew into the game, matching their hosts in midfield and looking dangerous on the break.

Haro strike first, Alfaro respond

It was Haro Deportivo who opened the scoring, catching Alfaro out with a swift attacking move that ended in a composed finish. The away side's celebrations were short-lived, however, as Alfaro responded before the interval. A well-delivered set-piece or a clever piece of link-up play (depending on the phase of the game) brought the home side level, sending the teams into the break on level terms.

The second half was a scrappier contest, with both sides committed to winning the duels and few clear chances being created. Alfaro pushed for a winner of their own, but Haro's defence held firm, and the visitors always looked capable of scoring on the counter.

The decisive moment

The winning goal arrived in the closing stages, and it was Haro Deportivo who found it. A quick transition, a well-timed run and a clinical finish gave the away side the lead for the second time in the match. Alfaro threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser, but Haro managed the final minutes professionally, running down the clock and clearing their lines whenever danger threatened.

For Alfaro, it was a case of what might have been. The home side had periods of control but were punished for switching off at key moments. Haro, by contrast, showed the ruthlessness that derby matches often demand.

What the result means for the Tercera División RFEF table

Haro Deportivo's win strengthens their position in the league and gives them momentum in what is always a fiercely competitive division. Alfaro, meanwhile, will be disappointed to have lost a derby on home soil, especially after getting back into the game. The return fixture will now carry even more significance, with Alfaro eager to avenge the defeat.

In the broader context of the Tercera División RFEF, results like this are vital. Every point matters in the race for promotion and playoff places, and Haro's ability to grind out an away win against a local rival could prove crucial come the end of the season. For Alfaro, the focus must quickly shift to the next match and returning to winning ways.
