Elche CF Ilicitano produced a dominant attacking performance to beat Valencia CF Mestalla 4-1 in the Spanish Segunda División RFEF on Saturday night, a result that underlined the growing strength of the Elche reserve side in a fiercely competitive regional division. The young Ilicitano team were sharper, quicker and more clinical than their visitors from Valencia throughout a one-sided contest.

Ilicitano start fast and never look back

Elche CF Ilicitano set the tone inside the opening quarter of an hour. Pressing high and moving the ball quickly through midfield, the hosts carved out the first goal in the 12th minute when a slick passing move ended with a composed finish from inside the penalty area. Valencia CF Mestalla tried to respond by slowing the tempo and keeping possession, but they were repeatedly caught out by Elche's aggressive counter-pressing.

The lead was doubled in the 38th minute following a well-worked set piece. A short corner routine caught the Valencia defence off guard, and the subsequent cross was turned home at the near post to make it 2-0. The visitors' frustration was visible as half-time approached, with their midfield struggling to link play and their forwards isolated against a well-organised Elche back line.

Second half: Elche turn on the style

Any hopes of a Valencia Mestalla comeback were effectively ended in the 57th minute. Elche Ilicitano won the ball back deep in opposition territory and immediately played a killer pass in behind, allowing their striker to round the goalkeeper and roll the ball into an empty net for 3-0. The goal was a perfect illustration of the home side's pressing game and their willingness to attack at speed.

Valencia CF Mestalla did pull one goal back in the 70th minute through a well-taken free-kick that curled over the wall and into the top corner. It was a moment of quality that briefly lifted the visitors, but Elche restored their three-goal cushion in the 84th minute when a flowing counter-attack was finished off with a low drive from the edge of the box. The 4-1 scoreline was no more than the hosts deserved.

Standout performers and tactical notes

Elche Ilicitano's front line was electric all evening, combining intelligent movement with ruthless finishing. The midfield trio controlled the rhythm of the game, winning second balls and transitioning defence into attack with real speed. Valencia CF Mestalla, meanwhile, showed flashes of technical quality but were too often second-best in the duels and struggled to cope with Elche's intensity out of possession.

• Elche's pressing: High, coordinated and relentless, forcing Valencia into rushed decisions.
• Valencia's issues: A lack of protection for the back four and too much space between midfield and defence.
• Finishing quality: Four goals from a variety of situations — open play, set piece and counter-attack.

What it means for the Segunda División RFEF table

The victory gives Elche CF Ilicitano a significant confidence boost and three valuable points in the race for position within their group. For Valencia CF Mestalla, it is a night to reflect on defensively, though the club's youth development philosophy means results at this level are always measured alongside individual progress. The return fixture later in the season will now carry extra incentive for the visitors, who will be eager to respond in front of their own supporters.
