Elche Ilicitano Edge Past Penya Deportiva in Tight Contest

Elche CF Ilicitano secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over SCR Penya Deportiva at the Ciudad Deportiva de Elche on Sunday. A single goal was enough to separate the sides in a match that was short on clear-cut chances but high on tactical discipline.

The win keeps Elche's reserve team in touch with the play-off places, while Penya Deportiva will feel they deserved at least a point after a resilient defensive display.

Match Overview

The first half was a cagey affair, with both teams cautious in possession. Elche Ilicitano saw more of the ball but struggled to break down a well-organised Penya Deportiva back line. The visitors' goalkeeper was called into action twice, tipping over a dipping free-kick and then denying a close-range header.

The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute. A quick corner routine found Álex Sánchez unmarked at the near post, and the defender flicked a header into the far corner. Penya Deportiva pushed for an equaliser, but Elche's defence held firm, clearing several late crosses with composure.

Tactical Story

Elche Ilicitano lined up in a 4-3-3, looking to dominate the ball and use their full-backs to stretch the play. Penya Deportiva deployed a low block, frustrating the hosts with compact lines and quick counter-attacks. The game turned on the set-piece, as Elche finally found a way through a disciplined defence.

After the goal, Penya increased their pressing and forced Elche deeper, but the home side managed the game expertly, slowing the tempo and taking the sting out of the contest.

Standout Players

• Álex Sánchez (Elche Ilicitano): Scored the winner and was commanding in the air at both ends.
• Javi López (Elche Ilicitano): Controlled the midfield with tidy passing and intelligent positioning.
• Carlos Ruiz (Penya Deportiva): A rock at the back, making several crucial interceptions.

Season Impact

Elche Ilicitano move up the Segunda División RFEF table, reinforcing their push for a top-five finish. Penya Deportiva remain winless on the road and will need to find goals soon to avoid being drawn into a relegation battle. The narrow margin highlights how competitive the division is, with small details deciding matches week in, week out.
