Coruxo held to 1-1 draw by SD Gernika

Coruxo FC and SD Gernika played out a competitive 1-1 draw on Sunday, 27 September 2026, in the Segunda Federación (Segunda División RFEF). Coruxo took a first-half lead, but Gernika fought back after the break to earn a share of the spoils in a game that both sides will feel they could have won.

Match overview

Coruxo started brightly and took the lead on 22 minutes through Brais Otero, who latched onto a through ball and slotted past the goalkeeper. The hosts continued to press and created several chances to extend their lead before half-time, but Gernika's goalkeeper made two fine saves.

Gernika came out transformed after the interval, pressing higher and moving the ball quicker. Their persistence paid off on 63 minutes when Aitor Zubizarreta found space in the box and finished calmly. Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but a combination of good goalkeeping and wasteful finishing kept the score level.

Key moments

• 22' – Goal, Coruxo: Brais Otero runs onto a through ball and finishes low.
• 41' – Save: Gernika's keeper denies Coruxo a second with a strong hand.
• 63' – Goal, Gernika: Aitor Zubizarreta equalises with a neat finish.
• 85' – Off the post: Coruxo come within inches of a late winner.

Tactical story

Coruxo lined up in a 4-2-3-1 and looked to dominate the ball, using their full-backs to create overloads. Their early goal came from a well-timed run and they continued to probe, but as the game wore on, they dropped deeper and invited pressure.

Gernika adjusted their shape after half-time, switching to a more aggressive 4-4-2 press. The change disrupted Coruxo's rhythm and allowed Gernika to win the ball higher up the pitch, leading to the equaliser. Both managers made attacking substitutions in the final 20 minutes, but neither could find a decisive goal.

Standout players

Brais Otero was Coruxo's brightest spark, his movement and finishing giving Gernika problems all game. Gernika's Aitor Zubizarreta was equally influential, capping a strong all-round display with the equalising goal. Both goalkeepers deserve credit for a string of saves that kept the scoreline respectable.

Table impact

The draw leaves both teams in mid-table, with Coruxo perhaps the more frustrated given their first-half dominance. Gernika will take heart from a solid away performance and a second-half comeback that showed character.

Neither side is in immediate danger, but both will need to turn draws into wins if they are to challenge for the promotion places. This was an entertaining, evenly matched contest that reflected the competitiveness of the Segunda Federación.
