CD Basconia and Portugalete played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in Spanish Segunda División RFEF on 26 October 2026, with a late equalizer completing a match that swung both ways in Group 2.

The Basque derby had intensity, tempo and four goals, making it one of the more watchable fixtures of the round. Basconia’s youthful energy and high pressing caused problems, while Portugalete’s experience and set-piece threat kept them in the contest. In the end, a share of the points felt like a fair reflection of an open, competitive game.

Match overview

Basconia started brightly and tried to impose their pressing game from the first minute. Portugalete, more measured in possession, looked to slow the tempo and strike through transitions. The lead changed hands in the second half, and both goalkeepers were called into action before Basconia found a late response to salvage a point.

Key moments

• 14th minute: Aitor Etxebarria gave Basconia the lead with a confident finish after a quick move down the left.
• 38th minute: Unai Lopez equalized for Portugalete, converting from close range after a corner was only half-cleared.
• 63rd minute: Mikel Garcia put Portugalete ahead with a well-timed run and a precise finish into the far corner.
• 86th minute: Jon Agirre rescued a point for Basconia, reacting first to a loose ball in the box and firing home.

Tactical story

Basconia’s high press forced Portugalete into several hurried clearances, but it also left space behind the defence when the first line was bypassed. Portugalete used that space well in the second half, mixing direct balls with patient possession. Set pieces were a constant threat, and both goals conceded by Basconia came from moments when they failed to clear their lines convincingly.

Standout players

Aitor Etxebarria was Basconia’s most dangerous attacker, combining movement with a sharp finish. Jon Agirre showed composure for the late equalizer and never stopped attacking. For Portugalete, Mikel Garcia was excellent in transition and took his goal with real quality, while Unai Lopez underlined his importance from set pieces.

Season impact

The draw keeps both sides in the competitive mix in the Segunda Federación promotion race. Basconia will value the character shown in coming from behind late on, though they will want to tighten up defensively. Portugalete leave with a useful away point but may feel they had done enough to win. In a group where fine margins decide playoff places, late goals like Agirre’s can carry real weight.
