Real Union de Tenerife Women 1-2 Villarreal Women: Late Ortiz Strike Seals Away Win

Villarreal Women maintained their push for promotion from the Spanish Segunda Futfem with a hard-fought 2-1 victory away to Real Union de Tenerife Women on Saturday evening. The match, played on the Canary Islands, was decided by a late goal from substitute Marina Ortiz, who pounced on a loose ball to secure all three points for the visitors.

The result extends Villarreal’s unbeaten run and keeps them firmly in the hunt for a return to the top flight, while Tenerife are left to rue a spirited performance that yielded no reward.

Match Overview

Villarreal Women started the brighter and took a deserved lead through Lucía Gómez midway through the first half. However, Real Union de Tenerife Women responded well, equalising from the penalty spot just before the interval. The second half was a tense, tactical battle, with both sides creating half-chances. It was Villarreal’s superior bench strength that made the difference, as Marina Ortiz scored the winner with 12 minutes remaining.

Key Moments

• 22' — Lucía Gómez opens the scoring for Villarreal with a precise left-footed finish from the edge of the area.
• 41' — Real Union de Tenerife Women equalise: captain Nayra converts a penalty after a handball in the box.
• 78' — Marina Ortiz scores the decisive goal, reacting quickest to a goalmouth scramble and poking the ball home.

Tactical Story

Villarreal Women dominated possession but found Tenerife’s deep 4-4-2 block difficult to break down. The hosts were content to sit back and counter, and they nearly took the lead on several occasions through rapid transitions. Villarreal’s coach made a key tactical switch, bringing on Marina Ortiz to add fresh legs and a more direct threat. The move paid off, as Ortiz’s movement in the box created the winning goal. Tenerife’s defence, marshalled by goalkeeper Carla, had been resilient but finally cracked under sustained pressure.

This result underlines Villarreal’s squad depth and their ability to grind out results on the road, a hallmark of genuine promotion contenders.
