Atlético Madrid B Women 5-3 Barcelona B Women: Eight-Goal Thriller Ends in Home Victory

Atlético Madrid B Women edged a remarkable eight-goal contest against Barcelona B Women on Sunday, winning 5-3 in a Spanish Segunda Futfem encounter that swung one way and then the other. The match was a showcase of attacking football, with both sides committing numbers forward and creating a steady stream of chances from start to finish.

Match Overview

From the opening minutes, it was clear this would not be a cagey affair. Atlético started brightly and took an early lead, only for Barcelona B to respond with a swift equaliser. The hosts then regained control with two goals before half-time, taking a 3-1 advantage into the break. But Barcelona B refused to lie down, pulling one back early in the second half and briefly threatening a comeback before Atlético restored their two-goal cushion and eventually sealed the win with a fifth goal.

The result represents a major boost for Atlético Madrid B’s campaign and a frustrating afternoon for Barcelona B, who contributed enormously to the spectacle but were undone by defensive lapses at key moments.

Key Moments

• 8th minute: Atlético took the lead through Carla Menéndez, who finished off a flowing team move with a composed strike from the edge of the box.
• 19th minute: Barcelona B equalised when Júlia Ferrer capitalised on a defensive mix-up and slotted home from close range.
• 27th minute: Atlético regained the lead as Menéndez turned provider, setting up Lucía Ortega for a simple tap-in.
• 41st minute: A stunning long-range effort from Paula Navarro made it 3-1, giving the hosts a crucial buffer at the interval.
• 52nd minute: Barcelona B reduced the deficit to 3-2 through Aitana Roig, who headed in from a corner.
• 67th minute: Atlético responded immediately, Menéndez completing her hat-trick with a low drive into the far corner.
• 74th minute: Barcelona B scored again to make it 4-3, Laia Pujol finishing neatly after a quick counter.
• 88th minute: Substitute Marta Iglesias sealed the points for Atlético, racing clear and finishing emphatically to make it 5-3.

Tactical Story

Both teams lined up with attacking intent, but Atlético’s 4-3-3 caused Barcelona B persistent problems with its width and vertical passing. The midfield trio of Menéndez, Ortega and Navarro repeatedly found pockets of space between Barcelona’s defence and midfield, and the front three stretched the back line with intelligent runs. Barcelona B, meanwhile, pressed high and forced turnovers, but their commitment to attacking left them vulnerable to quick transitions.

The game was decided in the moments immediately after Barcelona B scored. Twice the visitors clawed their way back into the contest, and twice Atlético responded within minutes. That ability to restore momentum was the difference between the sides, and it underlined the hosts’ greater composure in the final third.

Standout Players

Carla Menéndez was the undisputed star of the show, scoring a hat-trick and providing an assist. Her movement, link-up play and finishing were a constant menace. Paula Navarro also impressed with a spectacular goal and a disciplined midfield display, while Marta Iglesias made an instant impact from the bench with the clinching goal. For Barcelona B, Aitana Roig and Laia Pujol were bright spots, but the defensive unit will need to review a difficult afternoon.

What It Means in the Standings

The three points lift Atlético Madrid B Women up the Segunda Futfem table, giving them momentum as the season progresses. A five-goal haul also provides a healthy boost to their goal difference, which could be crucial in a competitive division. Barcelona B Women, despite the defeat, showed plenty of attacking promise, but their inability to hold onto momentum after scoring remains a concern. They will need to tighten up defensively if they are to climb the standings in the coming weeks.
