Elche CF and RC Celta played out a goalless draw in La Liga on 11 October 2026, a match that promised much but ultimately delivered a share of the spoils at the Estadio Martínez Valero.

Both sides had moments to win it, with disallowed goals, smart saves and one effort against the woodwork, but neither could find the breakthrough in a tense, tactical contest that leaves Elche and Celta with plenty to reflect on.

Match overview

The first half was a cagey affair, with Elche looking to press high and Celta happy to play through midfield with short, sharp passes. The best early chance fell to the hosts when a header from a corner was ruled out for a push in the box.

Celta grew into the game after the half-hour mark, with Iago Aspas finding pockets of space and forcing Édgar Badía into a fine low save. At the other end, Elche's Lucas Boyé saw a powerful strike deflected just wide.

Key moments

• 18' – Elche disallowed goal: A close-range finish is chalked off for a foul in the build-up, denying the hosts an early lead.
• 37' – Celta hit the post: A curling effort from the edge of the box beats the goalkeeper but rebounds off the upright.
• 58' – Double save: Iván Villar denies Elche twice in quick succession, first with his feet and then with a strong hand.
• 79' – Late Celta pressure: A series of corners causes panic in the Elche box, but the defence holds firm.

Tactical story

Elche lined up in a compact 4-4-2, looking to deny Celta space in central areas and spring forward on the counter. Their defensive discipline was impressive, but they lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

Celta dominated possession for long spells, using their full-backs to stretch the play and create crossing opportunities. However, Elche's centre-backs were dominant in the air, and the visitors were forced to shoot from distance more often than they would have liked.

Standout players

Édgar Badía was excellent in the Elche goal, making two crucial saves and commanding his area. Iago Aspas was Celta's creative hub, linking play and testing the goalkeeper with a trademark effort. Elche's Lucas Boyé worked tirelessly up front, while Celta's Iván Villar matched his opposite number with a vital double stop.

Table impact

The point keeps Elche in mid-table, unbeaten in their recent home fixtures but still searching for the wins that would push them towards the European places. Celta remain in the hunt for a top-half finish, though they will rue missed chances in a game they largely controlled.
