CD San Marcos Jiquilisco secured a 2-0 home victory over AD San Rafael in the El Salvador Segunda División, using a goal in each half to claim all three points and keep a valuable clean sheet.

The result gave CD San Marcos Jiquilisco a strong platform in the Segunda División table, while AD San Rafael were left to reflect on a frustrating evening in which they struggled to turn defensive resilience into attacking threat. Jiquilisco controlled long spells of the match and scored at important moments to ease the pressure.

Match overview

CD San Marcos Jiquilisco started with intent, pressing AD San Rafael high and looking to force mistakes in the visitors’ defensive third. The home side moved the ball quickly through midfield and used width well, creating several early crossing opportunities. AD San Rafael initially sat deeper, hoping to absorb pressure and strike on the counter-attack.

The opening goal arrived after a period of sustained pressure. Carlos Menjívar found space in the penalty area and finished calmly to give CD San Marcos Jiquilisco the lead. The goal changed the complexion of the match, forcing AD San Rafael to push more players forward and leaving space for the home side to exploit.

AD San Rafael improved after the break and enjoyed a brief spell of possession, but they were unable to create a clear chance against a well-organised Jiquilisco back line. The home side doubled their advantage in the second half when José Campos converted a well-worked attacking move, effectively sealing the result.

Key moments

• Opening goal: Carlos Menjívar gave CD San Marcos Jiquilisco the lead with a composed finish after sustained home pressure.
• Important save: AD San Rafael’s goalkeeper kept his side in the contest with a strong stop before the interval, denying Jiquilisco a second goal.
• Second-half clincher: José Campos doubled the lead for CD San Marcos Jiquilisco with a well-taken goal that capped a flowing attacking move.
• Clean sheet secured: Jiquilisco’s defence held firm in the closing stages, limiting AD San Rafael to hopeful efforts from distance.

Tactical story

CD San Marcos Jiquilisco’s approach was built on control and quick transitions. Their midfield won second balls consistently and fed the wide areas, allowing the home side to stretch AD San Rafael’s defensive shape. The early goal gave Jiquilisco the confidence to keep pushing, and their patient build-up play eventually created the second goal.

AD San Rafael, by contrast, struggled to maintain possession for long periods. Their defensive block was organised enough to frustrate Jiquilisco at times, but once they conceded the opener, they were forced to open up. That decision created space for the home side in midfield, and Jiquilisco took full advantage in the second half.

The match also highlighted the importance of game management. CD San Marcos Jiquilisco did not rush their attacks after scoring and remained compact when AD San Rafael tried to respond. Their disciplined structure made it difficult for the visitors to build sustained pressure.

Standout performers

Carlos Menjívar was central to CD San Marcos Jiquilisco’s attacking play, not only for his goal but also for his movement between the lines. José Campos added the second goal and worked hard to link midfield and attack. The Jiquilisco goalkeeper and centre-backs deserve credit for a clean sheet that underlined the team’s control of the match.

For AD San Rafael, the goalkeeper produced a number of saves to prevent a heavier defeat, while the defence showed determination under pressure. However, the visitors lacked a consistent outlet in attack and were unable to test the Jiquilisco goal often enough to mount a comeback.

Table and season impact

The 2-0 win gives CD San Marcos Jiquilisco three important points in the El Salvador Segunda División and strengthens their position in the standings. A home victory with a clean sheet is a valuable combination in a competitive division, and it provides momentum for the matches ahead.

AD San Rafael, meanwhile, will need to respond quickly. The defeat leaves them with lessons to take from their defensive organisation and a clear need to improve their attacking output. In a league where consistency is crucial, both teams will know that this result could matter when the final table takes shape.
