Alianza San Salvador secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over A.D. Isidro Metapán in the El Salvador Primera División on October 25, 2026, using a second-half goal and a disciplined defensive finish to take all three points at Estadio Cuscatlán. The result strengthens Alianza’s position in the title race and leaves Metapán to rue a night of missed chances in a match that was tight but never short of tension.

Match overview

Alianza San Salvador controlled much of the early possession, but A.D. Isidro Metapán arrived with a clear plan: stay compact, deny space between the lines, and strike on the counter. The first half produced few clear openings, with both sides probing without finding the final pass. Alianza’s best moments came through wide overloads, while Metapán looked dangerous from set pieces and quick transitions.

The decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute. Alianza worked the ball into the attacking third, and Jonathan Portillo found a pocket of space on the edge of the penalty area before firing a low drive beyond the Metapán goalkeeper. The goal lifted the home crowd and forced the visitors to commit more numbers forward. Metapán pushed late and forced a handful of nervous clearances, but Alianza’s back line held firm through stoppage time.

Key moments

• 18th minute: Alianza created the first real opening, with a cross from the right narrowly evading the run of the striker.
• 41st minute: Metapán won a free-kick in a dangerous position, but the effort sailed over the crossbar.
• 63rd minute: Jonathan Portillo scored the only goal of the game with a composed low finish from outside the box.
• 77th minute: Metapán made attacking substitutions and switched to a more direct approach, forcing Alianza deeper.
• 88th minute: Alianza goalkeeper Rafael Menjívar produced a crucial save to preserve the lead.

Tactical story

Alianza set up in a 4-2-3-1 shape and tried to dictate tempo through midfield. Their fullbacks pushed high to stretch Metapán’s back four, but the visitors’ low block made it difficult to find clean entry passes in the first half. Metapán’s 4-4-2 structure was designed to protect the central corridor and invite crosses, and for long stretches it worked.

The second half changed when Alianza began switching play more quickly and attacking the channels rather than forcing passes through the middle. That adjustment pulled Metapán’s midfield out of shape, creating the space Portillo exploited for the goal. After taking the lead, Alianza dropped slightly deeper and defended their box well, clearing crosses and limiting second-ball opportunities. Metapán’s late pressure was honest but lacked the precision needed to break down a well-organized opponent.

Standout performers

Jonathan Portillo was the obvious match-winner for Alianza, not only for his goal but also for his movement between the lines. Rafael Menjívar deserves credit for the late save that protected the three points, while Alianza’s center-back partnership handled Metapán’s direct spells with composure. For Metapán, the midfield worked tirelessly to screen the defense, and the goalkeeper kept the visitors within reach with a handful of solid stops before the breakthrough.

Season impact

The win gives Alianza San Salvador a valuable three points in the Primera División standings and reinforces their reputation as one of the toughest teams to beat at home. In a league where title races are often decided by narrow margins, grinding out 1-0 results is a hallmark of serious contenders. Metapán, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their organization but will know that points were available if they had been more ruthless in the final third.
