NK Publikum Celje U19 edged a five-goal thriller against NK Brezice U19, winning 3-2 in the Slovenia U19 league on a night of high drama at Brezice. The visitors from Celje showed their academy pedigree with a clinical attacking display, but Brezice pushed them all the way in an entertaining contest that swung back and forth.

Match Overview

Celje started the brighter and took an early lead through a well-worked team move, but Brezice responded with real character. The home side equalised before half-time and then stunned the visitors by taking the lead shortly after the restart. Celje, however, showed why they are considered one of the strongest youth setups in Slovenia, roaring back with two goals in the final 25 minutes to claim all three points.

The match was a fine advert for U19 football in Slovenia, featuring pace, skill, and no shortage of tactical discipline from both benches.

Key Moments

• 12th minute – Celje strike first: A quick passing sequence opened up the Brezice defence, and the Celje striker finished calmly into the bottom corner.
• 38th minute – Brezice equalise: A dangerous cross from the left was met with a powerful header that flew past the Celje goalkeeper.
• 54th minute – Brezice take the lead: A mistake in the Celje defence allowed the Brezice forward to round the goalkeeper and slot into an empty net.
• 68th minute – Celje level: A superb individual effort from the Celje playmaker, curling a shot into the top corner from 20 yards.
• 81st minute – The winner: Celje grabbed the decisive goal from a corner, with their centre-back rising highest to head home.

Tactical Story

Celje lined up in a 4-2-3-1 and dominated possession for long spells, using their technical midfielders to dictate the tempo. Brezice, playing a direct 4-4-2, looked to press high and hit on the counter-attack, a tactic that earned them their second-half lead. However, Celje’s superior bench strength and composure in the final 20 minutes proved decisive. Their ability to switch play quickly from side to side stretched the Brezice defence and created the space for the winning goal.

Brezice will be disappointed to have conceded from a set-piece so late on, but their performance showed they can compete with the best academies in the country.

Standout Players

Celje’s playmaker was the standout performer, scoring a brilliant equaliser and pulling the strings throughout. Their centre-back also deserves credit for a towering defensive display and the winning goal. For Brezice, the centre-forward who scored the second goal was a constant handful, while their goalkeeper made several fine saves to keep the game alive until the closing stages.

Table Impact and What’s Next

The 3-2 win strengthens NK Publikum Celje U19’s position near the top of the Slovenia U19 table, keeping them firmly in the title race. NK Brezice U19 remain in mid-table but can take plenty of encouragement from pushing one of the league’s heavyweights so close. Both sides return to action next week, with Celje looking to maintain their momentum and Brezice aiming to bounce back with a win.
