NK Rudar Velenje 2-0 NK Svoboda Ljubljana: Set-piece and counter seal home win

NK Rudar Velenje defeated NK Svoboda Ljubljana 2-0 on 17 October 2026 in the Slovenian 2. Liga, using a set-piece goal and a late counter-attack to secure all three points. The home side were patient, organised and efficient in front of goal.

Svoboda enjoyed more of the ball in the early stages, but Rudar’s defensive shape limited them to speculative efforts. The opener came from a corner, with Rudar’s centre-back rising highest to head home. The goal gave the hosts confidence, and they managed the game well from that point.

Match overview

After the break, Svoboda increased the tempo and pushed their full-backs forward. Rudar dropped deeper but remained compact, forcing the visitors into crosses that were comfortably cleared. As Svoboda committed more numbers, Rudar found space on the counter and sealed the win with a second goal in the closing minutes.

Key moments

• Set-piece breakthrough: Rudar’s centre-back headed in from a corner.
• Svoboda pressure: The visitors dominated possession but lacked a final pass.
• Goalkeeping save: Rudar’s goalkeeper denied a close-range effort at 1-0.
• Late counter: Rudar broke quickly and finished clinically for 2-0.

Tactical story

Rudar’s game plan was built on defensive solidity and set pieces. They defended their box well, blocked shots and used the aerial strength of their centre-backs. Svoboda’s possession was often slow, allowing Rudar to reset. The home side’s willingness to counter with purpose made the difference.

Standout performers

Rudar’s centre-back was dominant in both boxes, scoring the opener and leading the defence. The goalkeeper made a key save, and the midfielder who launched the late counter was instrumental. For Svoboda, the central midfielder kept the ball moving but lacked support in the final third.

Season impact

The win gives NK Rudar Velenje three valuable points in the Slovenian 2. Liga standings and another clean sheet. NK Svoboda Ljubljana will be frustrated by their lack of cutting edge despite seeing plenty of the ball. Rudar’s efficiency in both boxes was the difference.
