NK Publikum Celje booked their place in the next round of the Slovenia Cup with a controlled 2-0 away victory over Prevalje on 25 October 2026, scoring twice after the break to break down a stubborn host side.

The cup tie always looked like a test of patience for Celje, who entered as the stronger and more established club. Prevalje defended in a deep, compact block and made the first half difficult, but Celje’s quality told in the second period as they found the extra gear needed to turn territorial control into goals.

Match overview

Celje dominated possession from the opening minutes, circulating the ball across the back line and looking for space in wide areas. Prevalje were content to sit behind the ball, limiting central access and forcing Celje into crosses and long-range efforts. The hosts produced a few dangerous moments on the counter, but clear chances were rare before the interval.

After half-time, Celje increased the tempo and began to attack with more purpose. Their movement between the lines pulled Prevalje’s defensive shape apart, and once the first goal arrived, the visitors looked far more comfortable. The second goal underlined their superiority and effectively ended any hopes of a cup upset.

Key moments

The breakthrough came in the 54th minute when Celje worked the ball into the penalty area and finished calmly after a quick combination. That goal changed the mood of the tie, forcing Prevalje to step higher and leaving more room for the visitors to exploit.

Celje doubled their lead in the 78th minute, capitalising on a transition moment. A well-weighted pass released an attack behind the defensive line, and the finish was composed enough to leave the Prevalje goalkeeper with little chance. The home side pushed late in search of a consolation goal, but Celje managed the closing stages professionally and kept a clean sheet.

Tactical story

Celje’s approach was built on patience rather than panic. They kept their full-backs high, stretched Prevalje’s back line, and repeatedly recycled possession to create better angles. The midfield’s control was central to the performance, allowing Celje to sustain pressure without being exposed to too many counterattacks.

Prevalje deserve credit for their organisation. Their low block frustrated Celje for long spells, and their goalkeeper made several important interventions. In the end, however, the physical and technical demands of containing a higher-level opponent for 90 minutes proved too much.

Standout performers

Celje’s midfield dictated the rhythm of the match, winning second balls and keeping the team moving forward. The back line also deserves mention for staying alert during Prevalje’s rare attacking spells. For the hosts, the goalkeeper was the standout figure, producing a string of saves that kept the tie alive into the second half.

What the result means

The 2-0 win sends NK Publikum Celje into the next round of the Slovenia Cup with momentum and a clean sheet. For Prevalje, the defeat ends their cup run, but the performance offered plenty of encouragement against stronger opposition. The result is a professional away win for Celje and another reminder of their ability to solve difficult cup ties.
