Match Overview

Competition: ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup
Fixture: Lion City Sailors vs Cong An Ha Noi FC
Date: 8 October 2026
Venue: Jalan Besar Stadium, Singapore
Final Score: Lion City Sailors 0-1 Cong An Ha Noi FC

Lion City Sailors started brightly, with Maxime Lestienne and Bart Ramselaar looking to create openings from wide and central areas. The hosts moved the ball quickly, but Cong An Ha Noi's back line held firm, with goalkeeper Filip Nguyen commanding his penalty area and dealing comfortably with crosses.

As the first half wore on, the visitors grew into the contest. Their midfield began to win second balls and launch quick transitions, forcing the Sailors to defend in retreat. The best chance of the opening period fell to Cong An Ha Noi after a swift counter, but the final shot was dragged wide of the far post.

Key Moments

• 18th minute: Lion City Sailors' first real sight of goal, as a low cross from the right was turned toward goal, only for Filip Nguyen to smother the ball at the near post.
• 34th minute: Cong An Ha Noi broke rapidly through the middle, but the final effort from the edge of the box flashed just wide.
• 63rd minute: The decisive moment. Nguyen Quang Hai collected the ball just outside the area, shifted it onto his left foot and curled a precise low strike beyond the diving goalkeeper to make it 0-1.
• 78th minute: Lion City Sailors nearly responded when a header from a corner clipped the top of the crossbar.
• 90+3rd minute: A last-ditch block from the Cong An Ha Noi defence denied the hosts a dramatic equaliser, sealing the clean sheet.

Tactical Story

Cong An Ha Noi set up with a compact 4-2-3-1 shape that prioritised defensive solidity and quick counter-attacks. Their two holding midfielders screened the space in front of the back four, making it difficult for Lion City Sailors to find pockets between the lines. When the Sailors pushed full-backs forward, the visitors looked to spring forward through the channels.

Lion City Sailors, by contrast, dominated the ball but lacked a cutting edge in the final third. Their build-up was patient, yet the final pass was often delayed or overhit. The introduction of fresh legs from the bench added urgency, but Cong An Ha Noi's defenders threw themselves in front of shots and cleared their lines with conviction.

Standout Players

Nguyen Quang Hai was the match-winner, producing the one moment of genuine quality in the final third. His movement between the lines and calm finish underlined his importance to the Vietnamese side. Filip Nguyen also deserves credit for a composed goalkeeping display, while the centre-back pairing dealt with aerial pressure admirably.

For Lion City Sailors, Maxime Lestienne was the most inventive player, repeatedly looking to unlock the defence with angled passes and dribbles. Bart Ramselaar worked tirelessly in midfield, but the hosts ultimately lacked the finishing touch their approach play deserved.

What the Result Means

The 0-1 win gives Cong An Ha Noi a crucial boost in the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup group standings. Away victories in continental competition are precious, and this result strengthens their hopes of advancing to the next stage. Lion City Sailors, meanwhile, will need to bounce back quickly, especially with home fixtures likely to define their campaign.

The Sailors remain a dangerous side, but this defeat highlights the fine margins in the Shopee Cup. Converting territorial dominance into goals will be the priority for the coaching staff ahead of their next match. For Cong An Ha Noi, the challenge is to build on a disciplined away performance and maintain their momentum in the race for knockout-round qualification.
