Sloven Ruma Stun Vojvodina Novi Sad 1-0 in Serbian Cup

Sloven Ruma produced one of the standout results of the Serbian Cup round by beating Vojvodina Novi Sad 1-0 on 28 October 2026, defending a single goal with remarkable discipline and resilience.

Vojvodina Novi Sad entered the 20:00 tie as the clear favourites, but Sloven Ruma had other ideas. The home side sat deep, absorbed pressure and waited for their moment. When it arrived, they took it, then produced a determined defensive display to protect the lead.

Match overview

The pattern of the match was established early. Vojvodina controlled possession and looked to stretch Sloven Ruma with wide attacks and quick combinations around the penalty area. Sloven Ruma, by contrast, stayed compact and committed numbers behind the ball, making it difficult for the favourites to find clear shooting lanes.

As the game wore on, Vojvodina’s frustration grew. They increased the tempo in the second half and pushed more players forward, but Sloven Ruma’s back line held firm. Every clearance, block and save was greeted like a goal, and the home side’s energy never dropped.

Key moments

• Early resistance: Sloven Ruma survived an early spell of Vojvodina pressure, with the goalkeeper making a confident save and the defence clearing several dangerous crosses.
• The breakthrough: Against the run of play, Sloven Ruma scored the decisive goal, finishing a rare attacking opportunity to send the home crowd into celebration.
• Vojvodina response: The favourites dominated the ball after conceding, forcing a series of corners and free kicks, but could not find a way through.
• Late heroics: In the final minutes, Sloven Ruma produced a goal-line clearance and a crucial save to preserve the clean sheet.

Tactical story

Sloven Ruma’s game plan was clear and executed almost perfectly. They defended in a compact block, denied central space and forced Vojvodina into wide areas where crosses could be defended. The midfield worked tirelessly to track runners, while the forwards dropped in to help limit passing options.

Vojvodina Novi Sad had plenty of possession but lacked the final spark. Their build-up was patient, sometimes too slow, allowing Sloven Ruma to reset. When they did accelerate, the final pass or finish was missing. It was a classic cup upset: the underdog scored at the right moment and defended with total commitment.

Standout performers

Sloven Ruma’s goalkeeper was the hero of the night, making important saves and commanding the box under late pressure. The central defenders were equally impressive, winning headers and blocking shots. The goalscorer will take the headlines, but the clean sheet was a team effort.

For Vojvodina Novi Sad, the midfield trio saw plenty of the ball but could not unlock the defence. The forwards worked hard, yet found themselves crowded out whenever they received possession near the penalty area. It was a frustrating evening for a side that will feel it should have done more with its territorial advantage.

What the result means

The win is a major morale boost for Sloven Ruma and a memorable night in the club’s cup history. Knocking out a strong opponent like Vojvodina Novi Sad will give the players belief that they can compete with higher-ranked teams in knockout football.

For Vojvodina, the defeat is a painful early exit from the Serbian Cup. They will need to regroup quickly, because the league campaign offers no time for prolonged disappointment. The challenge will be to turn possession into penetration in their next fixture.
