Hamilton Academical started their Scottish League One season in the most emphatic manner possible, cruising to a 5-0 away victory over Montrose at Links Park on Saturday evening. The result underlined Accies' promotion credentials and left the home side with plenty to ponder after a difficult opening day.

Promotion favourites hit the ground running

Hamilton were straight onto the front foot, and the visitors' early intensity paid off when they opened the scoring in the 12th minute. A well-worked move down the right wing ended with a low finish that gave the Montrose goalkeeper no chance. The home side tried to respond, but Accies doubled their lead just before the break, converting from a corner after a scramble in the box.

Any hope of a Montrose fightback evaporated early in the second half. Hamilton came out with the same aggression and added a third within minutes of the restart, this time finishing neatly after a swift counter-attack. The visitors then put the tie beyond any doubt with two further goals, both coming from open play as Montrose pressed forward in search of a consolation and left gaps at the back.

Montrose unable to find a foothold

For Montrose, this was a sobering start to the 2026-27 League One calendar. Their defensive shape held for a time, but the constant pressure from Hamilton's midfield was too much. The hosts did manage a few encouraging moments, most notably a curling effort that drifted just wide and a late penalty appeal that was turned down, but they never truly tested the Accies goalkeeper.

This was a statement result for Hamilton Academical and one that will alert every other side in the division. For Montrose, the response must come quickly — the schedule will not get any easier, and finding a way to compete against the league's stronger sides will be key to their season.
