Saint Johnstone made a powerful statement in their opening Scottish League Cup group match by comfortably defeating Greenock Morton 3–0 at McDiarmid Park. The home side took the lead in the 14th minute when striker Stevie May latched onto a cross from Drey Wright and directed a looping header past Morton goalkeeper Brian Schwake. Manager Craig Levein will be delighted with the clean sheet and the fluency of his team’s attacking play. The midfield trio of Dan Phillips, David Wotherspoon, and Cammy MacPherson controlled possession effectively, while the back four, led by captain Andy Considine, were rarely troubled.

For Morton, the task now is to regroup and focus on their next group fixture. They will need to improve their defensive organization if they hope to progress from the group stage, but the quality gap against a Premiership side was evident here.
