Tactical story

Inver Gordon played with width and looked to get crosses into the box early, particularly from the left side. Their set-piece work was also a major factor, with MacKenzie’s header coming from a well-delivered corner. Turriff United tried to press higher after falling behind, but that left space in behind for Inver Gordon’s forwards to exploit.

The hosts were happy to absorb pressure at times and then break quickly. That approach worked perfectly for the third goal, when a direct pass split the Turriff defence and Farquhar finished the move. Turriff’s midfield worked hard, but they were often outnumbered in central areas when Inver Gordon counter-attacked.

Standout players

Liam Ross set the tone with the opening goal, while Craig MacKenzie was dominant in the air and a threat from set pieces. Ryan Farquhar’s pace and composure made him a constant danger on the break. For Turriff United, Scott Begg took his goal well and was their most lively attacker, but the visitors lacked the defensive solidity to contain Inver Gordon’s direct running.

Highland League impact

The win strengthens Inver Gordon’s position in the Scottish Highland Football League table and adds to their home record. Turriff United will be disappointed to concede three goals, especially after showing signs of a comeback at 2-1. In a league where consistency is often the difference between a top-half finish and a mid-table battle, this was exactly the kind of result Inver Gordon needed.
